The Story

The result of rigorous selection at each stage of production, in both the vineyard and the winery, this great, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon wine is typical of the Saint-Estèphe appellation. Structured and tannic but with all the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classé, with time it develops a delicate and complex bouquet.

The wines have considerable ageing potential and are exceptionally long-lived. Certain vintages (1921, 1929, 1...

Vintage 1945

The best vintage in the world – 1947 or 1945? Tastingbook has tasted all the best wines from these two great vintages.

If wine producers from different regions were asked to name the best vintages in their wine history, most would name 1947 or 1945 as one of the greats. If we then compared them, there would probably only be one vintage that most, if not all, producers had named on the list – 1947.

Written Notes

The Bottle was in excellen condition. Château-bottled with top-shoulder level. Decanted one hour and twenty minutes. Dark, but bright ruby colour with some fading at the rim. Lovely, well developed and perfumed nose of ripe cassis, soft plum and minerals with some spicy, minty notes. Spicey, full bodied and dense with a rounded texture. Youthful and vigorous. Well balanced, long and soft aftertaste. Amazingly, it still tasted less than a few decades old. A very classy wine that is drinking well now but will keep going for another decade.

The 1945 Montrose is youthful in color and shows thin bricking on the rim. The bouquet is delineated with scents of red berry intermixed with shaved black truffle and sous-bois, plus a touch of brown spice. The balanced palate delivers impressive, clean, pure red fruit, yet somehow comes across conservative and controlled, with a slightly blunt finish. Not the best 1945 but still a delicious, classically made claret. Tasted at Les Branleurs Montrose vertical in England.

Bright ruby, broad garnet rim. Figs, redcurrants, anise, leather, fruit driven, bright nose. Liquorice with more air. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, leaner, red fruits, detailed, nuanced, lively, leaner, same lively and playful red fruitiness of Ausone in the vintage and Pontet-Canet, have something similar. But it dies off after 45 minutes. 93
