Montrose hasn't been rated this highly since the turn of the decade. The 2009 is worth 40% more, and the 2010 is worth 25% more than the current 2016 price. Interestingly, Neal Martin only gave the 2015 a score of 95, so this upgrade to his in barrel estimate of 97 for the 2016 puts it head and shoulders above the previous vintage.

For Château Montrose, 2016 is an exceptional vintage.

The Story

The result of rigorous selection at each stage of production, in both the vineyard and the winery, this great, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon wine is typical of the Saint-Estèphe appellation. Structured and tannic but with all the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classé, with time it develops a delicate and complex bouquet.

The wines have considerable ageing potential and are exceptionally long-lived. Certain vintages (1921, 1929, 1...

2016 Bordeaux in Review / “A Once in a Lifetime Vintage”

By Andrew Caillard MW

The 2016 Bordeaux vintage will be remembered as one of the great years of the 21st Century. I have not been so excited about the prospects of such young wines since the remarkable back-to-back 2009 and 2010 vintages. At that time China was at the zenith of its extraordinary fine wine ascendency where the very top estates, particularly Chateau Lafite, had becom...

Bordeaux 2016 in review “A paradox”

by Andrew Caillard MW

The 2016 Bordeaux vintage will be remembered as one of the great years of the 21st century. I haven't been this excited about the prospects of wines this young since the remarkable 2009 and 2010 vintages. At that time, China was at the zenith of its extraordinary rise of fine wines where the highest estates, particularly Château Lafite , had become a backwater currency. Each man a...

Written Notes

Tasted in November 2021. 68% C. Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 7% C. Franc. This wine had a complex and fragrant nose of black fruit and a lot of silky fruit and tannin gently wrapped up in oak on the palate with both finesse and power. Strong backbone, astonishing complexity and length on the palate. Immensely impressive effort.

2015 Montrose - Starting to tighten up, so decanting is needed if you are going to taste this in its youth a well as a lot coaxing. With effort the wine is full-bodied, concentrated, deep, fresh and long. The wine marries power with elegance, energy and complexity with a juicy, clean quality to the dark, perfectly ripe, red and black fruits. There is a tobacco leaf and Asian spice quality to the fruits in the finish that is a nice addition to the complexities in the wine. This is not a wine for youthful enjoyment, so if you have the patience to wait for 15 years, you are going to have one of the best vintages of Montrose ever produced in your cellar.

Very dark colour, deep and intense. The complex, lively and precise nose presents aromas of well-ripened fruit with by oaked toasty notes and a spicy touch.

The attack is generous and opulent. The full and fleshy palate reveals silky and precise tannins. The full finish is incredibly long.

An exceptional Montrose, powerful, classy and elegant, a good representation of the signature of our terroir.

Very deep, there is a savoury edge here, dry grass, bacon, with undeniable black fruit in there too, the boot polish hints less pronounced than on the Dame, but still noticeable. This is exceptionally complex on the nose, the palate has salted chocolate, and this is just profound, the minerality is so apparent giving it an enormous length. There is a liqueur-like polished component. This is all so well tied in too. Just phenomenal, probably as good as the 2010. It soars. Wow!

  • 99p

Deep colour. Inky shellac, blackcurrant black olive aromas with espresso oak notes. Well rounded wine dense dark fruits and plentiful new cedar, touch cloves. Firm oaky finish with bitter sweet notes. Muscular vigorous and persistent. Will be something. Tasted at Ch Montrose. 96 points

Dark purple red with violet hue and black core. Complex and rich nose with excellent structure, blackberries and violets, dark chocolate, coffee and hints of gingerbread in the background. On the palate juicy and sweet fruit, complex aroma, excellent finish with extraordinary length but in very elegant and fine style. 97

Ruby. Floral, scented, violets, cassis, blueberries, detailed, elegant, vanilla, detailed and layered, nuanced. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh, fruity, juicy, detailed, elegant, some spices, refreshing, playful, lovely red fruity core with dark fruits surrounding it, stunning length. 97-99

Inside Information

"The 2016 Montrose has a tightly wound bouquet that is extremely well focused. This is one of the most pixelated aromatics I can remember on a Montrose at this stage, featuring blackberry, boysenberry and cedar and real mineralité underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with fine density and wonderful salinity. There is tremendous precision with razor-sharp tannin, and a brightness on the finish that is exceptional. This is a Montrose that will comfortably sit alongside the canon of great vintages from this Saint-Estèphe estate. As my score implies, it’s up there with the first growths. Stunning. Drink 2026-2075" - 99 points, Neal Martin, vinous

"Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Montrose is a little youthfully shy to begin, but with coaxing, it unfurls to reveal the most beguiling scents of wilted roses, oolong tea, crushed rocks, wild sage, star anise and candied violets over a wonderfully pristine, well-defined core of crushed blackcurrants, black raspberries and kirsch plus wafts of pencil lead and wood smoke. The taut, muscular, medium to full-bodied palate straddles jaw-dropping intensity and finesse superbly, featuring a solid backbone of ripe tannins and giving a firm frame right through the incredibly long, exquisitely nuanced finish." - 99 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate
