96-98 THE WINEADVOCATE: "Composed of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, harvested from September 17 to October 5, the 2018 Montrose has a very deep purple-black color and opens with tantalizing notes of crème de cassis, Black Forest cake, hoisin and mocha with nuances of molten licorice, fertile loam, cast iron pan and incense. Big, rich, full and powerful in the mouth, the voluptuous fruit has a rock-so...

The Story

The result of rigorous selection at each stage of production, in both the vineyard and the winery, this great, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon wine is typical of the Saint-Estèphe appellation. Structured and tannic but with all the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classé, with time it develops a delicate and complex bouquet.

The wines have considerable ageing potential and are exceptionally long-lived. Certain vintages (1921, 1929, 1...

Vintage 2018

Report and recommendations for the 2018 Bordeaux vintage

by Andrew Caillard MW

2018 is an exceptional year. Bordeaux whites and Sauternes are very good, but from an Australian perspective, the excitement is all in the red wines. All sub-regions produced examples of very good wines, but some performed better than others. Generally, the largest estates have made exemplary wines illustrating that the human factor and wealth can have a major...

Written Notes

Montrose - 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Classic Montrose and very classic for the district. Strong and powerful, "an iron fist in the velvet glove"! Bulldozering all the way, but moving elegantly. Creamy and with awesome complexity and length. Fatness and fabulous complexity. 14.8% alcohol but you really can't feel it due to fruit and tannin vastly integrating it. Knowing that Montrose is a slowly maturing wine, it can easily improve further with age. 98+p

This is a big and muscular wine with great structure and depth of fruit. Blackberry and blueberry character. Hints of fresh leaves. Cool earth. Incredible depth, yet so polished. Concentrated.
Barrel Sample:98-99

Dark crimson. Intense dark cherry, black currant dark chelate aromas with plentiful mocha oak notes. Fresh deeply concentrated sine with dark chelate, cassis fruits, fine chocolaty tannins and vanilla roasted chestnut notes. Finishes firm yet long. Unforced wine with deep set fruit, very attractive mid palate volume and superb structure. Very good.

  • 95p

This is dark and muscular in style, brimming with bramble, warm tar and paving stone notes that are matched by the deep layers of fig, blackberry and cassis fruit. A gorgeous bittersweet chocolate detail adds spine to the finish while violet and iron elements lurk in reserve. Another large wave of fruit and dark earth courses through the finish.

  • 97p

Dark purple red colour with violet hue and almost black core. Exuberant wine with fragrant fruit, sweet elderberries, blackberries, plums and black cherries, in the background gingerbread spices and discreet roasting aroma, subtle oak. On the palate rich and well balanced with savoury character, sweet tannins and exuberant fruit, complexity, depth and discreet freshness, another great Montrose

98-99 JAMES SUCKLING: "This is a big and muscular wine with great structure and depth of fruit. Blackberry and blueberry character. Hints of fresh leaves. Cool earth. Incredible depth, yet so polished. Concentrated."

97-99 JEB DUNNUCK: "The top wine of the estate as well as one of the wines of the vintage, the 2018 Château Montrose is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc brought up in 60% new French oak. Crème de cassis, smoky oak, graphite, and violet notes all emerge from this magical Montrose that has thrilling purity, building, layered tannins, integrated acidity, and a blockbuster finish. Deep, concentrated, and built for the long-haul, yet with the sexiness of the vintage, it’s in the same league as the 2016 and will be drinkable in just 4-5 years and keep for 40+."
