The Story

Hand harvested with successive sorting, in small crates with sorting in the vineyard. No destemming, no crushing. Gentle gradual pressing of whole grapes, without breaking up the press-cake. Run-off by gravity, racking of the must and vinification in new French-oak barrels. Aged for 10-12 months on the lees.

Vintage 2009

Much like 1947, 1961 and 2005, 2009 is a year of almost overly (for Bordeaux) flamboyant and opulent wines with high maturity and low acidity. The tannins are exceptionally ripe, while the wines are quite voluptuous in style. There was an unimpressive 2009 Pape Clement Blanc next. I have had excellent bottles of other vintages of this wine in the past, but I was very under-impressed with the 2009. It was pungent and sweaty in the nose, with some grapefruit and other yellow fruits, but I found its palate very one dimensional and unexciting. (87)
