Robert Parker's Wine Advocate / This wine has been seemingly fully mature since the mid- to late seventies. It is a seductive, opulent vintage for Petrus. The color now is a dark garnet with considerable amber at the rim. The incredible nose of Christmas fruitcake intermixed with mocha, jammy kirsch, and black currants is followed by a silky textured, full-bodied, very opulent wine that is still totally intact. The tannins have totally dissipa...

The Story

Drinking Pétrus may be an unforgettable experience. We has been lucky to have the opportunity to taste most of its great vintages. That is why wine enthusiasts often come to us for advice. First, WeI advise you to choose a good vintage, an excellent one if your wallet allows. If you taste a poor vintage, you will notice how it raises above most other wines of the same vintage, but you will miss the actual point of Pétrus.

Written Notes

The 1971 Petrus was ‘the same as last night’s bottle’ (last night was the Wine Workshop’s 1971 Dinner, btw).  I couldn’t fish the note out from that, but the Petrus was richer and more decadent than the Trot.  Even Jetski was impressed.  It is pretty rare that anything similar can top a Petrus, even when owned and run by the same family (97M).

"This rich, fresh monster was fabulous. My only criticism is that serving it as the twelfth wine in a dinner line-up was not giving us the treat of enjoying it when our taste buds were at their freshest. It had the life, sap and savour that the 1975, glorious as it was, lacked. I think this wine may just go on and on and on. Surely the best 1971 known to wine-drinking man? Or woman. 20/20 points  (07/2014)

This is my favourite vintage of Pétrus. The third time out of a magnum from the same cellar. A great Pomerol combining power with complexity and elegance.

Deep brownish garnet colour. Toasty, sweet, dried fruit nose full of paprika, salted licorice and dark berries. Powerful yet super smooth palate with the highest tannic grip so far. Full and round fruity taste which charms with its balance and elegance. Peaking now but the wine will keep for 10 to 15 more years due to the great harmony.

Deep brownish garnet colour. Endless complexity on the nose – toasty, sweet, dried fruit nose full of paprika, salted licorice, chocolate, walnuts, hint of black truffles, violets, and dark berries. Powerful yet super smooth even silky palate with the highest tannic grip so far. Full and round fruity taste which charms with its balance and elegance. Peaking now but the wine will keep for 10 to 15 more years due to the great harmony.
