vinousmedia.com - Stephen Tanzer - July 2013

98+ Points "Fully saturated ruby. Knockout aromas of fresh black cherry, blackcurrant, exotic herbs, coffee and menthol, plus a hint of minerality. Juicy, fruit-driven flavors of dark berries and cherry are complicated by cocoa, vanilla and graphite and given laser-like precision by vibrant, harmonious acidity. Manages to be both fleshy and acidic at the same time, demonstrating uncanny depth and...

The Story

Drinking Pétrus may be an unforgettable experience. We has been lucky to have the opportunity to taste most of its great vintages. That is why wine enthusiasts often come to us for advice. First, WeI advise you to choose a good vintage, an excellent one if your wallet allows. If you taste a poor vintage, you will notice how it raises above most other wines of the same vintage, but you will miss the actual point of Pétrus.

Written Notes

This feels dense and unyielding now, with loads of grip supporting a dark, muscular and very backward core of bay leaf, tobacco, plum, blackberry and fig notes. Powerful, fresh and racy, with a tarry edge adding vivacity and drive to the lengthy, raspberry-dominated finish. The raspberry spine seems destined to win out after extended cellaring. Best from 2017 through 2035.

This a Petrus with extraordinary balance and depth. It shows such elegance in the nose with complexity of black olives, dark fruits, and flowers. The palate is full and ultra-velvety yet there is a cashmere quality to the texture. It takes your breath away. There's almost a Burgundian quality in the mouthfeel meaning it takes you deep into the soil and captivates your attention. Greatest modern vintage of Petrus ever? Try after 2018.

  • 100p

The 2010 Petrus opens with notes of spices, cinnamon, plums, blackberries, cedar and violets, followed by luscious flavours and dense, velvety-textured tannins that caress the tongue. Olivier Berrouet, the wine director, says 2010 had amazing sunlight hours with temperatures that were not high, and the clay soil helped to rejuvenate the water stressed (100%) Merlot vines. Yields were lower than in 2009, at 35 hl/ha.

  • 98p

Grapes obtained 14.5% alcohol, yield 35 hl/ha and was harvested between 27th September and 2nd October. Incredibly complex wine, refined, silky and sophisticated on the palate, more than 30 seconds long finish. Exceptional stuff, but I think 2009 was maybe a bit richer and deeper than 2010. It can however change with ageing. 98-99p.

Good looking normal size bottle and in an excellent condition. Colour is ruby red, deep and youthful . On the nose it is intense, youthful, refined, tempting, pure and forward. The taste is fresh, ripe, powerful, with medium tannin ., with silky tannins, full-bodied, with perfectly balanced, complex, concentrated structure and youthful. On the palate it is layered and has perfumed, blackcurrant, blackberry, smoky, tobacco, earthy, vanilla, cigar-box, leather and cassis flavours. The finish is endless, extensive, pure and vibrant. This wine is sophisticated, impressive and masterpiece. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 20-30 years and decant at least 2h before tasting.
