First, WeI advise you to choose a good vintage, an excellent one if your wallet allows. If you taste a poor vintage, you will notice how it raises above most other wines of the same vintage, but you will miss the actual point of Pétrus.

Written Notes

The 2004 Petrus is a beautifully crafted wine that showcases the estate's hallmark elegance and depth. It displays a deep, dark ruby color with a hint of purple at the rim. On the nose, it offers a complex bouquet of black cherry, plum, and cassis, complemented by earthy undertones and subtle notes of truffle and graphite.

The palate is rich and full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a refined structure. Flavors of ripe black fruit are accented by hints of dark chocolate and a touch of spice. The wine’s balanced acidity and smooth texture lead to a long, lingering finish.

I didn’t have much to say about the 2004 Petrus, other than ‘similar candied profile’ and ‘softer.’ It was still an excellent wine, although these young adolescents were starting to be difficult to differentiate as much as the older wines, which is both the worst and best fact about great Bordeaux – it is tough or often a mistake to drink young, but oh so good when old (93).

The dark plum/ruby-tinged 2004 Petrus possesses high acidity as well as copious amounts of sweet cherries and black currants intermixed with hints of cola, earth, and truffles. Deep, medium-bodied, concentrated, ripe flavors are excruciatingly firm and tannic. This backward, structured, muscular Pomerol requires a decade of cellaring, but it possesses the potential to be the longest lived wine of the vintage, lasting 30-40 years. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2035.
