Tallawanta Vineyard Shiraz 2024 ($150) – This vineyard was planted in 1920. Maturation is in French oak puncheons and one 600-litre demi-muid, with new oak comprising just 17%. It does seem that this wine hides in the shadow of the famous Graveyard, but the quality is such – there is but the proverbial wafer-thin between them – that this really is fabulous buying (yes, everything is relative).
Vibrant magenta with a purple rim, the nose reveals aromas of truffles, charcuterie, mulberries, spices, warm earth, herbs, aniseed and superb oak integration. It is beautifully perfumed throughout. A wine of great length with concentration running the full journey, and immaculate balance at all times, it finishes with supple tannins. Love this. It should excite over the next fifteen years. 97.
