The Story

The vines were planted in two stages by Auguste and Pierre Morey. They are old, weak vines producing little (between 20 and 35 hl/ha). Badly affected by fan-leaf degeneration, they have improved considerably since the application of biodynamic preparations. The parcel is situated at the far south of Montrachet also facing south. The soil is fairly dark, quite deep and stony. It consistently produces wines rich in alcohol, balanced out by their...

Vintage 2020

In Burgundy, the harvest is over for most farmers. It has been a year with a lot of heat both in July and August. A huge problem this year has been leaf-thinning and canopy management. Those who have not paid enough attention to the leaf-thinning experienced problems with sunburned grapes.

In Cote d’Or, it is especially the heat that has been tricky this season. First and foremost, some grapes have been burned by the sun resulting in raisin...

Written Notes

The 2020 vintage in Burgundy was warm, early, and exceptionally concentrated—one of the smallest harvests in decades due to heat, drought, and millerandage. Yet the quality was superb: the best whites from top sites retain astonishing freshness despite the warmth, thanks to old vines, deep root systems, and careful vineyard work.

For Montrachet, and especially for Comtes Lafon’s minuscule holding, 2020 is a vintage of immense power, crystalline definition, and monumental structure—a wine that combines the opulence of a warm year with the precision and minerality of truly great terroir.

The Montrachet 2020 from Comtes Lafon is a wine of breathtaking grandeur—profound, layered, and architecturally complete. It is the rare white Burgundy that feels both explosive and perfectly controlled.

The nose is powerful yet refined, opening with white peach, Meyer lemon, and ripe pear, carried by waves of acacia blossom, honeysuckle, and citrus oil. Beneath the fruit lies an unmistakable Montrachet core: warm limestone, crushed shell, beeswax, toasted hazelnut, and subtle brioche. As it evolves, hints of ginger, chamomile, and saffron add complexity and depth.

On the palate, the wine is rich, deep, and intensely structured, but never heavy. The texture is luxurious—silky, dense, and finely grained—supported by 2020’s vibrant acidity, which imparts lift and precision. Layers of ripe stone fruit, lemon curd, white nectarine, and almond cream build across the palate, intertwined with a powerful, saline mineral spine.

Subtle notes of smoke, toasted spice, and chalk emerge toward the finish, which is long, resonant, and immaculate, carrying an echo of citrus zest, stone, and gentle oak.

A monumental Montrachet—opulent yet incredibly focused, showing the unmistakable power of the climat and the finesse of Lafon’s touch. While already seductive, its full majesty will unfold over 15–30+ years, gaining depth, harmony, and profound tertiary complexity.

The 2020 Montrachet Grand Cru, which this year is matured in one-third new oak instead of 100%, has a very mineral-driven bouquet with impressive focus and vibrancy. I think that prudent approach to the new oak reveals more of that prized Montrachet "dirt". Very expressive and transparent. The palate is brilliantly balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh, spicy and taut with veins of stem ginger and silex towards the persistent finish. Stunning. Closure: Diam 30
