The Story

This parcel was planted in three different stages, the oldest by Auguste Morey, the next by Pierre Morey and the third by Dominique Lafon. Very well situated in the upper part of 'Les Charmes', the last vines at the south of the appellation next to ' Puligny Combettes'. It faces due east, is relatively deep clay and limestone (argilo-calcaire) with very crumbly rock deep down. The grapes ripen well and the wines are always powerful though never falling into the heavy wine bracket. Production is even, between 40 and 50 hl, accidents excepted

Vintage 2008

An indifferent spring caused uneven flowering and mildew risk. At the end of June the weather changed for the better, continuing into July. Apart from local hail in the Côte de Beaune at the end of July, the summer began well. August arrived fairly cold and variable, but fortunately the last week of the month brought fine, warm weather. The lead-up to harvest saw sunny skies, apart from two days of rain in mid-September. A challenging vintage.

From day one the red wines have had a rich, pure fruit character with fine, silky tannins. The whites offer a good balance between ripe fruit and vibrant acidity. A vintage not to be overlooked because the wines deliver potential and pleasure.

Written Notes

Tasted in a famous German Restaurant. The bottle looked perfect.

I am always cautious with older Comtes Lafon wines and this bottle gave every reason to stick to my rules. Although the bottle was served too cold, the signs of premox were obvious from the first moment on. The colour not bright, yellow with brown edges. An unsatisfying bouquet with notes of nuts and fino sherry and not any fruit. Although with air it later on gained some weight, for me it stayed unpleasant to drink. Perhaps other tasters may say that this wine offers lots of minerality but this is a Meursault Premier Cru and not a Chablis.

Disappointing for a wine at this high price. A bottle of the 2006 Meursault Charmes, Comtes Lafon which I tasted two years ago was as dead as can be.
