The Story

The vines were planted in two stages by Auguste and Pierre Morey. They are old, weak vines producing little (between 20 and 35 hl/ha). Badly affected by fan-leaf degeneration, they have improved considerably since the application of biodynamic preparations. The parcel is situated at the far south of Montrachet also facing south. The soil is fairly dark, quite deep and stony. It consistently produces wines rich in alcohol, balanced out by their...

Wine Information

It was a cold, drawn-out winter in 2010,  some two degrees cooler than the average, though rainfall and sunshine were normal. There was one severe attack of frost on December 22nd, just before Christmas, which caused widespread damage on the upside of the main road from Beaune to Dijon. In many places the road is on higher ground, and the land dips before climbing up towards the premiers crus, thus causing a frost pocket. It is here, just as i...

Written Notes

A sublime, seamless wine, the 2010 Montrachet impresses for its fabulous balance and sense of harmony. All the elements are in the right place. Floral aromatics meld effortlessly into highly nuanced fruit. Hints of smoke, slate and mint add complexity. Not surprisingly, the Montrachet has tightened up considerably since I tasted it from barrel last fall. The 2010 is going to require a measure of patience. Today, it is an infant, and also shows some of the effects of its recent bottling in June, 2012. Lafon’s parcels lie on the Chassagne side, but the wine itself shows more of a Puligny-like finesse. Anticipated maturity: 2016+.

There is still enough wood to merit mentioning framing the aromas of acacia, citrus and spicy white-fleshed orchard fruit. There is fine concentration to the big, muscular and broad-shouldered flavors that coat the palate with dry extract still imparts a borderline chewy texture on the mineral-driven, powerful and hugely long finish. While this has become civilized and could certainly be enjoyed now, it is still clearly very young and still developing so if you wish to appreciate it at its peak, it will be necessary to wait a few more years. A monument in the making.

An enviable four barrels of this wine. Rich marzipan nose and enlivened by an array of green fruit flavours underneath - more obvious acidity than in some vintages and more freshness than the Meursault Perrires. Big and magnificent overall. Tasted: 22-Nov-2011

Ripe, ample, full, profound nose. Very lovely fruit. Full body. Lots of vigour and concentration. Very fresh and minerally. Splendid dimension and still very, very young. This is excellent.
