The Story

Domaine Ramonet produces 24 Appellation wines from 40 Acres located primarily near the hamlets of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet in the southern part of the Côte de Beaune region in Burgundy.  Parcels of vineyards were progressively acquired since the first acquisition in 1934, the most recent being Bouzeron in the Côte Chalonnaise.

The Montrachet vineyard, at an altitude of 820 to 885 feet, produces the finest expression of the Chardonnay grape anywhere on earth. It owes its name to Mont-Rachet or Bald Hill as the soils are poor, thin and lie on hard limestones traversed by a layer of reddish marls, with the best slope in its area versus the other neighboring Grands Crus.  Its origin dates back to the Middle Ages in the 15th Century.  Its status was first recognized as a Grand Cru in 1937, which was subsequently cemented in the mid-20th century with a number of great vintages.

Buying into a Montrachet plot of land was usually something that only the most wealthy and ambitious producers attempted, but Ramonet’s purchase in 1978 is one of the most legendary stories in Burgundy.  When Père Ramonet, 72 years of age, grandfather of Noël & Jean-Claude, walked into a lawyer’s office in Beaune, he paid entirely in cash and then excused himself to return to the familiarity of his vineyards and cellar.

Vintage 2009

A warm spring with some hail in the northern part of the Côte de Nuits. After an even flowering and a warm June, the summer arrived with variable July weather. Fortunately August was fine with a period of hot weather in the second week. September started with some rain, then became fine and warm again. A harvest of healthy, ripe grapes followed. The 2009s have all the structure packed in with rich, luscious fruit. Comparable to the 2005s. Great wines.

Written Notes

Good looking normal size bottle, is in a excellent condition and level is 2cm ullage below the cork. Colour is deep. On the nose it is youthful, intense, seductive and ripe. The taste is ripe, warming, with silky tannins, with good texture and multi-dimensional structure. The finish is long, round, extensive and flavorful. This wine is exotic, excellent and fine. I paid around 1k-3k€ a bottle. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 10-15 years and decant at least 2t before tasting.

Inside Information

Ramonet is one of the top names in Chassagne Montrachet, and whether you’re after red or white you can’t go far wrong with any of their range. It is the whites, however, that are the most renowned – especially those from the great grand crus Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet and Le Montrachet. These are consistently among the best examples of white Burgundy you’ll see, and this kind of quality extends down to the premier cru and village wines as well. A sure thing.
