The Story

Domaine Ramonet produces 24 Appellation wines from 40 Acres located primarily near the hamlets of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet in the southern part of the Côte de Beaune region in Burgundy.  Parcels of vineyards were progressively acquired since the first acquisition in 1934, the most recent being Bouzeron in the Côte Chalonnaise.

1999 VINTAGE in Burgundy

The last harvest of the century

Generous yields and exceptional quality for Burgundy's 1999 harvest

Burgundy, France, November 1999 ? The 1999 Burgundy wine harvest was as generous in terms of yield as it was exceptional in terms of quality. According to the Burgundy Wine Bureau (BIVB), the climatic conditions permitted, as happens only rarely, the number of grape bunches per plant to exceed the average of the...

Written Notes

It is rare when a magnum of Ramonet Montrachet finishes “last” in a flight of wine, but it will soon become obvious why the 1999 Ramonet Montrachet did.  There was great acidity and power here, as top ‘99s are prone to have, but it was a bit coy.  Someone hailed the flight ‘as spectacular a flight of whites as you will see.’  There was a nice, sweet core on the waterfall and mint side in the middle, but it was still shy.  It was also definitively long and lifting…to be continued (95+M).

Pale straw yellow. Apples, lemons, minerals, vanilla, detailed and layered nose, nuanced. Fresh acidity, apples, lemons, minerals, detailed, nuanced, long, citrus, candied lemons, perfect bottle of this, lovely! 95

One of the most distinctive wines of the entire tasting with a particularly curious nose just as the Ramonet wines had stood out in the 2000 white burgundy tasting added recently to tasting notes. This time, however, the strangely pronounced aromas were rather pleasantly reminiscent of eucalyptus (and I was not the only taster to pick up exactly this unusual note for a white wine). It did lessen with time to reveal an interesting, open, nutty sort of Montrachet that is so high in acidity and tannins at this stage that it's almost aggressive. This wine takes no prisoners but, to mix my metaphors, I'm pretty sure it will make fascinating old bones.

Very ripe and concentrated and profound on the nose. Splendidly, concentrated, rich, ripe fruit. Great depth. Still very young. At the end – for this bottle evolved quite fast in the glass – the wine is quite soft, showing lovely fruit. Now just aboiut à point. Very fine.
