The Story

A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc. The grapes are grown in vineyards planted on white soil which is rich in limestone, firm clay and stones.

The two varieties are fermented and macerated separately for around 15 days. After 12 months of ageing in oak and further 6 months in concrete vessels, they are blended and aged for several months in the bottle before being released.

Written Notes

In Bolgheri, winter was mild and uneventful, with just enough rainfall to prepare the soils for the cycle ahead. There was no hint yet that this would become one of the more defining early vintages for the estate. Spring unfolded gently, with steady budbreak and a calm, even rhythm in the vineyards. The vines moved forward without stress, almost cautiously, as if observing the season before committing to it.

Summer arrived with balance rather than drama. Warm, dry days alternated with cooler coastal influences, creating a growing season that never tipped too far in either direction. The grapes ripened gradually, maintaining freshness while slowly building depth. It was not a year of extremes, but of consistency—a steady hand guiding the vines toward maturity.

As harvest approached, conditions remained stable. There were no climatic surprises, no urgent interruptions. Instead, growers were given time—time to observe, to taste, to wait. That patience proved essential, as the fruit reached optimal ripeness in a narrow but clear window. Harvest decisions were deliberate, focusing on preserving balance rather than chasing power.

And so, 2001 became a vintage shaped by clarity and proportion.

In the glass, Camarcanda 2001 feels composed and classic. The fruit profile is mature, leaning toward dark berries, dried cherry, and subtle plum, framed by earthy, savory undertones. There is less of the youthful intensity seen in later vintages, and more of a developed, almost tertiary complexity that comes with time.

The structure is elegant rather than forceful. Tannins have softened into a fine, integrated texture, while acidity provides just enough lift to keep the wine alive and balanced. Notes of leather, tobacco, dried herbs, and gentle spice emerge, giving the wine a quiet depth rather than overt power.

This is not a vintage that speaks in bold gestures. It speaks in layers—subtle, steady, and measured. It reflects a time when the estate was still defining its voice, yet already showing a clear commitment to precision and restraint.

Camarcanda 2001 is, in essence, a story of foundation. A year where everything aligned just enough to create balance, but without excess or exaggeration. It represents an early expression of identity—less polished than later great vintages, but authentic, structured, and quietly confident.

It is a reminder that not all great wines are born from perfection; some are born from consistency, patience, and the steady shaping of potential into form.
