Vintage 2021

2021 Barossa Valley Vintage Report

Following two particularly dry seasons, many were hoping for Mother Nature to be much kinder, and mostly she was. Winter rainfall in 2020 recorded 148mm, the same as winter 2019, (22% below average). The majority of this rainfall was in the latter half of August, with the rain continuing into September and October. This was ideal timing to replenish soil profiles to field capacity moving into budburst in O...

Written Notes

The 2021 vintage in the Clare Valley is regarded as one of the region’s finest in recent memory—cool, even, and beautifully extended. A mild spring with regular rainfall set up excellent canopy health, while a long, temperate summer provided slow, steady ripening. Crucially, the season avoided significant heat spikes, allowing Cabernet Sauvignon to achieve superb tannin maturity, outstanding aromatic clarity, and vibrant natural acidity.

For Jim Barry’s The Clarevale, 2021 stands as a vintage of purity, lift, and classical structure, expressing both the finesse and the mineral depth of the Clare’s famed terra rossa soils.

The Clarevale 2021 is a poised and beautifully refined Cabernet—bright, sculpted, and layered, showcasing the elegance of a cool, balanced vintage. The nose opens with vivid aromas of blackcurrant, ripe red cherry, and mulberry, supported by notes of violet, bay leaf, graphite, and gentle cedar spice. With air, subtler tones of cassis leaf, crushed gravel, mocha, and tobacco flower emerge, adding dimension and complexity.

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, focused, and impeccably proportioned. The 2021 vintage’s hallmark acidity provides lift and tension, highlighting a core of cassis, black cherry, and redcurrant. Tannins are fine, long, and delicately chalky, giving the wine both structure and finesse. Layers of sage, dark chocolate, pencil shavings, and red-earth minerality build across the mid-palate, culminating in a long, fresh, and beautifully balanced finish marked by purity rather than power.

A superb Clarevale—elegant, expressive, and terroir-driven, capturing the precision and harmony of the 2021 season. It will evolve gracefully over the next 10–15+ years, gaining further aromatic depth and savory nuance.
