The Story

Between the estates of Pétrus and La Fleur-Pétrus, amid vineyards, stands a stone house with closed shutters. The road that winds to the house between the vine rows has no signs or indications as to the name of the place. The construction looks more like a maintenance shed for the neighbouring estates than the main building of a winery. However, this is a house that makes one of the most desirable wines in Bordeaux: Château Lafleur.

Vintage 1961

1961 - the greatest Bordeaux vintage ever?

I’m writing this during the en primeur campaign and notice that the Bordelais château-owners and négociants have been unusually quiet this year. I have followed this part of the market from a distance for close to 30 years now and have been told about a large number of “vintages of the century”. After the wines have been bottled and sold or the other way round, as the case is in Bordeaux, these cla...

Written Notes

We hit a big time Lafleur trifecta next; it was a thrilling flight, and none more thrilling than the 1961 Lafleur.  It is extremely difficult to find a good bottle of this wine, but when you do, it is incredible.  It had a deep nose that was so plummy, chocolaty and full of royal garden aromas.  This was a rich and sumptuous bottle, tangy and intense with amazing texture and incredible acid. This was a perfect bottle, truly incredible.  It smacked lips and asses (99).

Medium red, with some amber at the edge. Deep, laid-back nose of cherry and coffee, along with a leafy suggestion of cabernet franc; a whiff of old oak dissipated quickly with aeration. Wonderfully sweet but with fruit of steel, as the wine powerful acids give it great tensile strength. Offers distinct roasted notes of surmaturite, yet comes across as youthfully tight. Finishes with powerful tannins and uncanny grip. Amazingly, this wine will still benefit from more bottle aging. Drink 2005 to 2030.

Inside Information

Wine Advocate #103
Feb 1996
Robert M. Parker, Jr. 98 Drink: 1994 - 2014 $5200
I had poor luck with the 1961 Lafleur until several years ago. In four recent tastings, this wine has been at the upper end of my scale. This particular bottle was extremely young, with an opaque garnet/black color, and a powerful nose of black truffles, sweet, over-ripe cherry fruit, and grilled meats. A sensational wine, with huge body, massive extraction, great exuberance, and considerable tannin in the thick, exotic finish, it is not yet close to full maturity.

The notes for this wine are taken from the description of Series III - Flight D of the 1995 tasting conducted in Munich by Helga and Hardy Rodenstock. Many years after the tasting from which this note derives allegations were made concerning the authenticity of old and rare bottles of wine sold by Hardy Rodenstock to collectors around the world. The matter has been the subject of numerous articles, litigation and at least one book. Mr. Parker believes that the wines served to him at this tasting were authentic so this note and the others from that specific tasting continue to be posted on eRobertParker.com.
