The Story

Between the estates of Pétrus and La Fleur-Pétrus, amid vineyards, stands a stone house with closed shutters. The road that winds to the house between the vine rows has no signs or indications as to the name of the place. The construction looks more like a maintenance shed for the neighbouring estates than the main building of a winery. However, this is a house that makes one of the most desirable wines in Bordeaux: Château Lafleur.

Vintage 2013

BORDEAUX 2013 VINTAGE REPORT

The 2013 vintage in Bordeaux was one of the most difficult since 1965 and 1968. Thomas Duroux of Château Palmer describes it as “the most complicated vintage in 20 years”. It rained almost continuously in the spring. Flowering was uneven, leading to poor set, millerandage and coulure. The threat of mold was alleviated by the arrival of warm, dry weather during the summer. For a while, winemakers hoped that abund...

Written Notes

Open, accessible flavours with an array of blackberries, plums and spices. Medium bodied with wonderful freshness and good depth. This vintage is approachable and beautifully crafted. Same quantity of Lafleur this year versus past several years which is surprising given how little people made in Pomerol in 2013.

Lafleur 2013 / Ripe dark nose with plum, roasted hazelnuts, milk chocolate and some menthol. Equally complex on palate with good purity of fruit and layered texture. Firm, yet ripe tannins and juicy acidity. Good length. 91p

Ex-cellar stock - perfect condition

Tasted half-blind, I knew that it was Lafleur but not which vintage. Deep, healthy colour, seductive and open bouquet of dark berries and fine oak. Surprisingly accessible, medium-bodied, delicious ripe fruit, not too sweet, excellent balance, tannins not as tough as often with younger Lafleur.

I thought it must be older than 2013, as it showed a certain development.

In my opinion this wine is starting to be ready to drink but there is no need to worry that it will age too fast. A really fine Pomerol and a very, very good Lafleur. Lafleur is never a bargain, but the overall bad image of vintage 2013 gives several opportunities to buy this at a decent price compared with other, not naturally better Lafleur of other vintages. I enjoyed this very much and I can recommend to try it, if you see it on a wine list.
