Between the estates of Pétrus and La Fleur-Pétrus, amid vineyards, stands a stone house with closed shutters. The road that winds to the house between the vine rows has no signs or indications as to the name of the place. The construction looks more like a maintenance shed for the neighbouring estates than the main building of a winery. However, this is a house that makes one of the most desirable wines in Bordeaux: Château Lafleur.

Looking more closely at the decade, attention should also be drawn to the 1950 Bordeaux vintage, which offered more quantity than quality - with a few exceptions. Due to the relatively rainy summer, expectations for the year were not very high, but the change in weather at the end of the year made it a good year, and even excellent in some areas. The wines did not have the full and balanced character of the previous year. They were rather note...

Written Notes
This was a fascinating bottle. It was in fine form, and the level was top-shoulder. Decanted only 45 minutes. Light and feeble colour. Exposed and very seductive, fragrant, candied sweet bouquet. Flawless and silky, but also with a firm backbone of minerals. Rich and soft wine with drying fruit that echoes chocolate and coffee. Has lots of complexity, but requires fast drinking. Long and remaining at the end. Sensational, old-style refined Lafleur.
Up until this point in my wine drinking life, the most perfect wine I have ever tasted. Delicate body with intense flavours that are both persistent and ethereal. Complex flavours of dried flowers, spices and sweet dried red fruits that unfold layer by layer on the palate and go on and on. The magnum format has helped the wine retain its vibrancy and youthfulness. A gorgeous wine.
Mezmerizing nose with opulence and depth–earthy, nutty, smoky, beetroots. Full-bodied, intense, jammy, spicy, fragrant, and warming mouthfeel. Rich and velvety texture with sweet long-lasting finish. Harmonious and intense wine with great character.

Tasted 3 Times With Consistent Notes
Perhaps the greatest kept secret in all of Bordeaux is how spectacular the 1950 vintage was in Pomerol. The 1950 Lafleur could easily pass for a 1947 or 1945 wine given its extraordinary level of concentration. The color remains black/purple, and the bouquet offers aromas of cedar, spices, and black fruits. The wine is unbelievably concentrated, massively full and rich, with sweet tannin in the finish. With a viscous, chewy texture, this pure wine could easily last for another 15-20 years. |
