This wine shares the same sad story of 1947 Lafleur - almost all the ones on the market are fakes!

The Story

Between the estates of Pétrus and La Fleur-Pétrus, amid vineyards, stands a stone house with closed shutters. The road that winds to the house between the vine rows has no signs or indications as to the name of the place. The construction looks more like a maintenance shed for the neighbouring estates than the main building of a winery. However, this is a house that makes one of the most desirable wines in Bordeaux: Château Lafleur.

Vintage 1945

The best vintage in the world – 1947 or 1945? Tastingbook has tasted all the best wines from these two great vintages.

If wine producers from different regions were asked to name the best vintages in their wine history, most would name 1947 or 1945 as one of the greats. If we then compared them, there would probably only be one vintage that most, if not all, producers had named on the list – 1947.

Written Notes

Quite old and damaged-looking bottle with only the remains of the label and capsule left. Château-bottled with top-shoulder level. Decanted at first for only 30 minutes, which was not enough. 1,5 hours would be the most favourable decanting time. Full, vigorous colour. Fine, very concentrated and intense nose with nuances of cedar, darkchocolate and eastern tobacco, but a core of ripe, sweet blackberries. The palate has elegance with a wonderful minerality giving a very clean, vigorous impression. Rich, full and lovely to drink. Quite honest and powerful wine. It is not as exotic and stylish as 1947 or 1950, but has an excellent, long finish.Still has a fine future.

Tasted Once

Similar to the 1947 Lafleur in aromatic complexity and flavor, richness, and textural thickness, the 1945 is blacker in color, less evolved, and possesses a more classic structural profile than the port-like 1947. The 1945 tastes young, yet astonishingly unctuous, rich, and powerful. It will easily last for another 40-50 years. Will the 1975 turn out to be this memorable?
