BILLECART-SALMON RELEASES 200TH ANNIVERSARY CUVÉE

Champagne Billecart-Slamon has released its limited edition ‘Bicentenary Cuvée’ exclusively in magnums as it marks its 200th anniversary and has opened new cellars.

The launch of the limited edition wine was marked by a garden party in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ in June and the wine is now available in selected retailers around the world.

The Bicentenary Cuvée is a blend of wines from eight grand cru sites in the Montagne de Reims and Côte des Blancs from four vintages, it is Pinot Noir dominant (92%) and just 1,818 magnums of have been produced (a nod to the house’s founding date of 1818).

The house has also unveiled its new cellar at its base in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ.

The Bicentenary Cuvée is available in the UK at independent merchants for £1,400 per magnum.

Historia

It all began in 1818 when Nicolas François Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon founded a Champagne House that was above all conscious of the excellence of its wines. Since then, every member of the Billecart family has been committed to perpetuate the family tradition through standing by the immutable oath: ‘Give priority to quality, strive for excellence’. Proof of this eternal demand: the family garden at the Billecart-Salmon estate. This garden was redesigned in 1926 in a French style under the guidance of Charles Roland-Billecart.

This garden was redesigned in 1926 in a French style under the guidance of Charles Roland-Billecart. The idea of his project was to create a garden at the heart of the village, enclosed by walls surrounded by lime trees primed in to a canopy, with boxwood enbroidery, lawns and flowerbeds.

The garden was kept in this style until 1999, when a storm destroyed the remaining old trees, leaving only one chestnut tree soon to be 200 years old. Francois Roland-Billecart, therefore decided to enlarge his grandfather’s garden by adjoining the part of it that had stayed out of sight.  He entrusted this project to his sister Véronique Roland-Billecart. From the foundation of the House of Billecart-Salmon in 1818 until now, each generation has invested in the preservation of this garden. Furthermore the family has thrown itself in to modernising the art of their wine making descended from nearly two centuries of experience. With a background of the best champenois tradition, the House of Billecart-Salmon sways between excellence and demand, keen to convey their love of champagne whilst cultivating a certain amount of mystery.

Viiniviljelykset

The excellence of Champagne Billecart-Salmon is above all due to the knowledge of its men who cultivate with rigour an estate of 100 hectares and obtains its grapes from an area totalling 220 hectares, in 40 crus of Champagne region. The majority of the grapes used for vinification come from a radius of 20km around Epernay, where the Grand Crus of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier co-exist, in the mythical lands of the Montagne de Reims, the Vallée de la Marne or the Côte des Blancs.

The jewels of the estate are cultivated out of sight in the Clos Saint-Hilaire. Fruit from half a century of careful cultivation, this hectare of Pinot Noir, preciously sheltered by a wall of stone, gives birth harvest after harvest, to an exceptional champagne, of rare complexity and a stunning freshness.

Viinivalmistus

The House of Billecart-Salmon has preserved ancestral vinification methods handed down from generation to generation and constantly perfecting them. Always conscious to improve the quality of their champagne, in the fifties the House established the technique of chilling the must combined with the use of stainless steel tanks for a longer fermentation at a lower temperature. Over time, the wines conserve their freshness, the aromas intensify, allowing the Billecart-Salmon champagnes to deliver all it promises.

On the perpetual quest for excellence, a new chai was built to hold more than 450 oak barrels to skilfully enhance the vinification of the vintage wines. The magic continues down in the limestone cellars, dating from the XVII and XIX century,
day after day guarding the wine. Finesse, balance, elegance. Close your eyes and let the charm of Billecart-Salmon take over you.
