The Story

Between the estates of Pétrus and La Fleur-Pétrus, amid vineyards, stands a stone house with closed shutters. The road that winds to the house between the vine rows has no signs or indications as to the name of the place. The construction looks more like a maintenance shed for the neighbouring estates than the main building of a winery. However, this is a house that makes one of the most desirable wines in Bordeaux: Château Lafleur.

Lafleur’s wines form an interesting contrast to their neighbour, Pétrus. Their terroirs differ significantly, even though the distance between them is only 50–100 metres. Whereas Pétrus is more seductively rich, full-bodied and intense, Lafleur is charming in its elegance, femininity and subtlety.
Lafleur’s wines are delightful, but they do require aging for at least twenty years in order to display their full, nuanced character. Guinaudeau’s investments into improving quality in all of Lafleur’s functions promise an even better future for the friends of Lafleur. Although tasting the 1947, 1950, 1961, 1975 or 1982, one can only wonder whether Lafleur’s wines could get any better?

The construction looks more like a maintenance shed for the neighbouring estates than the main building of a winery. However, this is a house that makes one of the most desirable wines in Bordeaux: Château Lafleur.

We drive into the yard and walk up to the door. It is opened by the cheerful Jacques Guinaudeau, fifth-generation owner and winemaker of the estate. Jacques’ great-great-grandfather Henri Greloud bought the land in 1872. Over time, ownership was transferred to Henri’s son Charles and then to Charles’s cousin André Robin, who was known for paying great attention to the quality of the estate’s wines. In 1946, the estate was inherited by André’s daughters Thérèse and Marie, who managed it for nearly four decades. It was under their leadership that the estate produced several magnificent vintages, of which the 1947, 1950, 1961 and 1975 stand out as legendary. In 1981, the sisters turned to their neighbours, the Moueix family, to ask whether Pétrus’s long-term winemaker, Jean-Claude Berrouet, might be interested in consulting and managing their estate. The partnership was made and bore fruit already the next year, when one of the best-ever vintages of Lafleur – 1982 – was created. Three years later, Thérèse died and Marie decided to lease the vineyards to her cousin Jacques Guinaudeau and his wife Sylvie. Since then, the Guinaudeaus have significantly developed the plots and production processes. Their methods and production philosophy are actually closer to Burgundy than Bordeaux. The Guinaudeaus bought the estate in 2002, which was also when their son Baptiste started to work there.

Jacques Guinaudeau leads us into the vineyard. He excitedly praises the uniqueness of the 4.5-hectare estate.
“Lafleur is a single-vineyard wine with exceptional terroir qualities. Firstly, it is located on a very gentle amphitheatrical slope to the north of Pétrus. The soil is clearly more gravelly and brown than the red clay at Pétrus. A comprehensive soil analysis in 1998 found that the estate comprises as many as five different types: the northwest has brown gravel, the south is more clay-based and sandy gravel, and the east has sandy clay with some gravel. In the middle is a mixture of all of those. These have completely different conditions in terms of the grapes’ ripening, size and concentration. The concentration is also affected by the old vines, with their average age of thirty years. The oldest vines actually go back five decades. We work the vineyard as four different plots, even though they go towards a single wine. We grow two varieties, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, but the differences in soil result in very different grapes within each variety. This diversity is the secret to Lafleur’s greatness,” Guinaudeau explains. Weaving between the densely planted vine rows, Jacques goes on: “The vineyard has around 8,000 vines per hectare. Through dense planting we aim not only to increase the grapes’ concentration, but also to protect them from direct sunlight. This is in order that we can ensure the refined style of our wines that results from their fresh fruitiness and crisp acids.”
Due to the terroir factors mentioned above, harvesting and winemaking are done in many phases. A separate wine is produced from each of the four microterroirs. The grapes are picked in many stages and vinified separately for each plot. Guinaudeau keeps track of this multiphase process with the help of a squared-paper notebook. In it he logs when each plot’s grapes are picked the vats in which they end up.

The weather conditions in Bordeaux during the 1921 growing season were instrumental in shaping the extraordinary character of the vintage. The year began with a mild winter, followed by a warm and dry spring. Summer brought ideal conditions, with consistent sunshine and warm temperatures, allowing the grapes to ripen fully. The harvest took place under clear skies, resulting in grapes of exceptional quality.

Bordeaux 1921 Reds: The best red wines of Bordeaux from the 1921 vintage are considered excelent and have achieved iconic status among collectors and wine enthusiasts, especially the ones from Left Bank.

Appearance: The 1921 Bordeaux reds typically exhibit a deep garnet color with little sign of aging, showcasing their remarkable longevity.

Nose: On the nose, the 1921 Bordeaux reds offer a complex and alluring bouquet of dried fruits, cedar, tobacco, leather, and hints of truffle. The aromatic profile is a testament to the exceptional ripeness and concentration of the grapes.

Palate: In the mouth, the 1921 Bordeaux reds are marked by their remarkable depth, concentration, and structure. The tannins, having aged gracefully, provide a velvety and luxurious mouthfeel. The wines maintain a refreshing acidity, contributing to their longevity. Flavors of dried cherries, blackcurrants, and nuances of spice and tobacco intermingle harmoniously, creating a profound and enduring finish.

Last and not least, wines number 19 and 20 on this legendary evening, were a pair of 1921 Pomerols, beginning with a magnum of 1921 Lafleur. Yeah, yeah, I know what some of you are thinking already but read on first, will ya? The Lafleur was decadently thick and rich, chocolaty and intense, chunky like Afa and Sika yet agile like Samala. Any Wild Samoan fans out there? Anyway, it had the full fruit symphony – black, red, purple and even blue. It was so rich and thick in the mouth, I coined it ‘redunkulous.’ Lush, round flavors and a thick finish added up to championship material. This was a Nicolas magnum, recorked in the ‘80s according to Rob, and it had a blank cork. Now I know that probably a majority of people in the wine world, both collectors and resellers (at least today ahem ahem) would probably immediately assume this magnum to be fake. I doubt I would sell it in today’s marketplace, too. However, it was consistent with all the other Nicolas bottles of ‘20s Pomerol that I have had (Nicolas are pretty much the only ones you can find anymore that are legitimate), and it was incredibly good, showing amazing concentration and tell-tale Pomerol qualities. I think Gil said it a couple months ago best, something to the extent that ‘if something this good is fake, I don’t care.’ And if this magnum was fake, then every single 1920s Pomerol in existence is fake, too. Now I didn’t go into this long diatribe because Rob has a lot of old Pomerols in his upcoming auction at the end of April; in fact, he insisted on not offering any, citing market insecurity and the fact that ‘they’re just too damn good.’ And this magnum was a perfect case in point; it was, indeed, ‘too damn good.’ I went into this diatribe because I choose to believe that there are real bottles of these wines still in existence, and that on the scales of justice, paranoia sometimes has to be balanced with a healthy dose of reason. I don’t think too many people treated to a glass of this wine, from this magnum, could convince me or any of the incredibly experienced tasters at our table that something was fundamentally unsound about this wine

1. Start by Signing up and creating your profile

2. Next, Create your personal Wine World

- Click iFollow (Discover) from the top menu

- Tastingbook has added automatically into your wine world 5-10 of the most active professionals or Pro's as we call them.

- Search for more pros or other users by typing their name in the search field. Then click into my world to those who you want to include in your wine world. This way, you may be notified when they taste wines or comment on them.

- You can also add wines and wine producers into your wine world. This allows you to access the most up-to-date information about them.


3. Invite your friends to join the tastingbook

- Click your username on the top menu and choose invite

- Type your friends email addresses and click send invites

- You can follow the status of your invitation on the same page


4. Create a tasting and do tasting notes

4.1. Click the New tasting button from the top menu.

- Name the tasting as you wish.

- Set the place and time (You can also add your past tasting notes by just changing the date)

- Click the add new wine button on the right to add new wines to the tasting.

- Now go to the box that says 'Click to add the wine'.

- Start by typing the wine or producer name and select the wine from the list that appears.

- After you have selected the wine, the vintage selection will be opened automatically

- Select the correct vintage by clicking on it.


4.2. Next, click My tasting note box and the worlds most advanced tasting

- From the bottom left of the tasting tool you can select in which language you want to use and view tasting notes.

- just do your wine note by clicking the correct adjectives. The adjectives can be activated by clicking once, or de-activated by clicking again.

- Tastingbook Pros will teach you while you taste wines.

At the bottom of the page in the section Show notes of, you may view notes of the professionals by clicking Pro's. If any of the tastingbook pros have tasted the wine before their opinion will show in the gold colored frames around the adjectives on the tasting view.


4.3. After you have completed your wine note, it's time to give Tb points.

Click the box on the bottom right Give points.
In case you want to add any comment or personal thoughts related to this wine, you may tick the note box next to the scores. In this field you may add copy-pasted texts for instance your old notes, etc.


4.4. After you've completed your notes for all the wines, click Close tasting.

You may now share some general thoughts about the tasting or tasted wines and choose with whom you want share your tasting. Set the Tasting privacy to limit the audience who are able to view your tastings information. We suggest you use Everyone as most of the wine experiences are meant to be shared.

Note:

If a wine that you are tasting is not found in our database, please be kind enough to send us an email to: addwine@thetastingbook.com, please include at least the wine name and producer. We will add the wine in tastingbook within 24 hours.


5. Tastingbook is full of information and stories - how to find them.

Tastingbook is full of information about wines, vintages, and wineries and also has over 30.000 pictures of wines. To best way to find what you are looking for is to browse the site from the Browse field in the top right corner.

You may search for wine, vintage, producer, pros or other community members by typing the name in the browse field. You may then choose from the drop down menu.
