The Story

RunRig is the flagship wine of the Australian Torbreck Vintners. Formed in 1994 in the historical hamlet of Marananga, Torbreck has quickly become one of the Barossa Valley’s leading wine producers. Since those first wines were released, they have attracted universal acclaim and are now highly prized by wine connoisseurs around the world. Still, Torbreck is a privately owned and operated company, following the philosophy, direction and passion...

Tasting note

Written Notes

Appearance: Opaque deep purple-black with a vibrant magenta rim; pronounced viscosity, signaling concentration and power.

Nose: Monumental and multi-layered. Intense dark fruits—blackberry compote, blueberry, and black cherry—are interwoven with exotic spice, anise, licorice, and dark chocolate. Savory Barossa signatures of smoked meat, graphite, and iron-rich earth add depth, while élevage contributes notes of espresso, cedar, and vanilla bean. Despite its density, the aromatics remain remarkably fresh and precise.

Palate: Dry, full-bodied, and commanding yet controlled. The palate delivers immense concentration of dark fruit and savory spice, supported by muscular but finely textured tannins. Acidity is surprisingly vibrant, lending lift and balance to the wine’s power. The mid-palate is dense and layered, showing notes of mocha, black olive, cracked pepper, and mineral undertones. Alcohol is well integrated, with no sense of heat.

Finish: Exceptionally long, rich, and resonant, with persistent dark fruit, spice, and savory umami notes lingering on the palate.

Overall: A benchmark Barossa Shiraz of scale, intensity, and refinement. RunRig 2020 marries raw power with precision and freshness, built unequivocally for long-term aging while already displaying impressive harmony for its size.

Serving: 16–18°C. Decanting strongly recommended (2–3 hours) to allow full aromatic and textural expression.

Pairing: Grilled or braised beef, lamb shoulder, venison, barbecue with smoke and spice, or long-aged hard cheeses.

Drinking window (estimate): 2026–2050+.
