Vintage 1961

1961 - the greatest Bordeaux vintage of all time?

I am writing this during the primeur campaign and I notice that Bordeaux château owners and merchants have been exceptionally quiet this year. I've been following this part of the market remotely for almost 30 years now and have been told about a lot of the "vintages of the century". Once wines are bottled and sold or vice versa, as is the case in Bordeaux, these claims tend to be changed.

Written Notes

The 1961 Figeac is a vintage that I have encountered several times in the past. This is a fabulous example from a period when it was firing on all cylinders under Thierry Manoncourt. Deep in colour, it has a magnificent and multi-dimensional bouquet with stunning definition, intoxicating aromas of dark berries, cedar, over-ripe apricot and bay leaf. You just want to lose yourself here. The palate is fresh and elegant, the Cabernet Franc perhaps a little more heightened compared to previous bottles with a perfectly knitted, almost sumptuous finish. Tasted at the 1961 dinner Chairman Miaow’s in Hong Kong.

D 1 h / G 1.5 h Ruby red colour with medium intensity. Developed earthy bouquet with intense aromas of ripe dark fruits. Firm and crisp medium-bodied palate with marked mineral flavours. Moderately intense dark fruits with hints of spicy notes escorting moderately long finish. Less elegant and vivid wine with rustic style. No further ageing.
