The Story

„Lafite hat eine Seele. Eine schöne, großzügige, freundliche Seele. Lafite verwandelt bloße Erde in einen Traum. Lafite ist Harmonie, die Harmonie zwischen Mensch und Natur. Ohne die Winzer auf Lafite gäbe es auch keinen Wein. Aber ohne den himmlischen Odem dieses einzigartigen Fleckens Erde könnten sie niemals etwas derart Herausragendes erschaffen.“

Baron Eric de Rothschild

Written Notes

The 1955 Lafite Rothschild magnum was more open in a gamy way, smokier with more red fruits, carob and slate. The palate was smooth and light by comparison with tangy citrus and cherry flavors. There was a nice balance to this plateau-ing wine, which wasn’t showing any signs of decline. It got a little more signature in the glass, moving away from the tang, but staying bright and lean (93M).

The 1955 Lafite-Rothschild is more pale in color than the 1962 with a wide brick rim. The bouquet is understated but refined, with strawberry punnet and Morello scents, laced with crushed rose petals and pencil shavings. Light tannins on the palate for sure, but the acidity is pitched just right and it seduces with its comeliness and feminine guile on the finish. The 1955 Lafite lacks the arching structured of the Latour and therefore I recommend that this fully mature Lafite-Rothschild should be consumed over the next decade. Tasted at the Lafite-Rothschild dinner at Amuse Bouche in Hong Kong.

Slightly faded cherry red colour with brown hints. Wonderfully warm, sweet, enticing nose of glace cherries, fudge and spice. Superelegant palate is concentrated and textured, with fine structure and some cherry fruit still present. Real finesse here, this is elegance in a wine personified. Pure, silky cherry fruit. 98/100

Fantasticly ripe and aromatic nose with finesse and sophisticated touch. Not the powerful wine, rather elegant one like ballerina, very captivating wine.
