The Story

The red is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsault. Serge Hochar, who has been involved with the property since 1959, states that the Cabernet Sauvignon provides "the bones and the skeleton to the wine, the Carignan the flesh and muscle and the Cinsault the silky smooth finesse".

1999 was an exceptional year, starting with a dry winter, leading to a fresh spring and good flowering (although yields were reduced by lack of water). Summer was mild; July and August were cloudy; September was hot and sunny, enabling grapes to achieve high levels of alcohol, acidity and extract.

1999 Chateau Musar rouge: A little lighter ruby than the preceding 2005. I’m not submitting notes for the 2005 this time because the wine didn’t speak to me. The 1999 was more musky and autumnal on the nose, with a touch of copper. Leaner palate, very rich, velvety and integrated. Shorter than the 2005 but developing more secondary flavors. More savory and spicy with violets and Nebbiolo character.

Moderately light, bright, ruby red colour. Less pronounced nose, peppery, sweet red fruits, strawberries and raspberries with bubble gum aromas. Dry, moderate level of acidity, supple and round tannins with delicately intense ripe red fruitiness. Medium-bodied wine lacking complexity but nice intensity for short term ageing 4-6 years.
