clos des bouveries 2005

A perfect marriage of soil and expertise

Clos des Bouveries, overlooking the village of Vertus, is an ancient plot of land belonging to the Duval-Leroy family, which enjoys a mid-slope position facing due east. This situation provides exceptional conditions producing one of the earliest growth cycles in the area, and enriching the fruits with an intense concentration of flavour, giving a most favourable effect on the senses.

A pioneer in the sustainable development of vineyards, the Great House of Duval-Leroy creates the concept of the oeno-climatic cuvee. The Clos des Bouveries cuvee is a vintage champagne every year. The wine reflects the impact of the the climate on Champagne and shows the effect of its changes in the medium and long term.

This champagne reflects the terroir, the climate and the know-how of the Chef de Cave. From a single plot and from a single grape variety, Clos des Bouveries is partially fermented in oak barrels to contribute fine woody notes and partially fermented in stainless steel tanks for mineral purity.

This vintage 2005 reflects the influence of the climate on the vineyard. Indeed, the year 2005 was marked by alternating quiet periods of growth and more active sprouting. After a dry winter, the bud burst started on April 13th. Thanks to temperatures higher than the ten year average,, the blooming started on June 14th, the veraison on August 8th and the harvest on September 15th. This vegetative cycle was very similar to that of the vintage 2002. The climatic conditions allowed a healthy harvest notable for a good balance between sugar and acidity.

Thus, this Clos des Bouveries 2005 Champagne shows silver tints shaded by a yellow-green colour, and lemon and pear aromas, adorned by a subtle eucalyptus hint, followed by fine smoky notes.

Grape variety: 100% Chardonnay

Bottle size: 75cl

Vintage 2005

The 2005 vintage was a year of marked contrasts between seasons and regions. Following a fairly harsh winter, 2005 had a mild spring with relatively warm temperatures all year long. There was above average sunshine and a slight water deficit, as had been the case throughout the dry cycle of 2005/2004 and 2003. The heat and humidity in July produced larger grapes and bunches, rather unusually for the Champagne region, while the cooler weather in August, followed by a very sunny month of September, led to favourable ripening in spite of heavy parasite pressure. The harvest dates were “typical” of those of the decade: September 12th for Chardonnays and the following day for Pinots Noirs.
