The Story

Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles is located to the south of the Côte de Beaune, at the summit of the slope where the villages of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet converge, but on the Puligny commune, just above Le Montrachet.
It is very small : 1.28 acre.

Louis Jean Baptiste Jadot bought back the vineyard in 1913 from two sisters and decided to name it "Les demoiselles". This vineyard had already belonged to his grand-father who had bought it in 1845.

The subsoil is extremely chalky with a lot of stones, perfectly drained and easy to overheat with south-south-eastern exposition.

Chevalier Montrachet "Les Demoiselles" is produced only with Chardonnay grapes, fermented and aged 15-18 months in oak barrels before bottling. This vinification highlights the unique qualities inherent in the fruit of this great vineyard.

Maison Louis Jadot produces limited quantities of this grand cru, which in many vintages equals or surpasses Le Montrachet in concentration and complexity. Its bright, golden colour and penetrating fragrance of toast and honey predict the rich, mellow fruit flavours, velvety elegance and intense finish of this wine of exceptional grace and breed.
This wine best suits turbot, monkfish, scallops with white truffles, roasted lobster, grilled foie gras, braised veal, free range chicken

Wine Information

After a real winter, with truly cold temperatures (particularly in January), but with less rainfall than average, budbreak took place earlier than usual at the end of March during a superb early spring that saw vigorous vegetal growth. During the last fortnight of April, some rain fell on the already well-developed plants (many of which were already showing 3-4 leaves, sometimes more). On the 18th and 29th of April intense, deadly frosts caused widespread damage in Chablis, the Couchois (to the west of the Côte Chalonnaise) and part of the Châtillonnais (which lies to the northwest of Dijon). Despite the use of both protective systems, the buds – and in some cases the shoots – were wiped out.

For the second year in a row, potential yields in Chablis were significantly reduced. Subsequently, there were a few weeks of slow growth as both the dry soils and the cool conditions meant that the vines took their time to put on a growth spurt. The frost-affected sectors were significantly delayed. Then in May, several falls of rain and higher-than-average temperatures reminded us that the vine is, well, a vine… Growers picked up the pace in the vineyard and began lifting the canopies. At the start of June, vines in the earlier-ripening areas flowered, but then suffered a little bit in the hot conditions. There was some evidence of poor fruit set, particularly when it came to the whites. Pinot flowered later, in more moderate conditions, and promised well in terms of future fruiting.

Overall yields promised to just about reach the average in whites, but the red harvest was clearly going to be generous. We saw little in the way of disease pressure, although there were a few spots of downy mildew fairly late in the growing season, but these were quickly brought under control. There was some evidence of powdery mildew in July, but it caused little damage. Overall, summer was fine. There was little rot and the grapes ripened steadily, although the lack of rainfall (a shortfall equivalent to two whole months of rain compared to the average) began to make itself felt. There were no significant hailstorms. Veraison took place during July during rather dry conditions, but the weather turned in our favour towards the end of the growing season, and we saw good levels of rainfall at just the right moment towards the end of August. This triggered the last bit of ripening and the grapes were in perfect health at the start of harvest at the beginning of September. Picking took place in good conditions, with little need for triage and good levels of ripeness overall.

Vintage 2017

BURGUNDY 2017 - In 2017, everything came good for the Bourgogne winegrowing region in terms of both quality and quantity. And after several years of harvests that suffered the whims of the weather, 2017 has provided volumes set to satisfy the market, with wines that are already promising great things to come from this elegant vintage.

After spending the winter building up their strength, the vines profited fully from a very warm spring, with budburst in early April ensuring a head start in terms of the growth cycle that was maintained right up to the harvest. The plants progressed from stage to stage free from hindrance, and by mid - June, were flowerin g before rapid fruit set. An early vintage was confirmed.

During the summer, a few spells of heatwave alternated with more mixed weather. However, ripening continued at a good pace and by the end of August, the first grapes were being picked, two weeks a head of average . Harvesting continued until mid - September as each plot reached peak maturity . The grapes were in exceptional health and required virtually no sorting. Everyone was very enthu siastic about this fabulous fruit, its peak ripeness, and the volumes produced. The only downside were a few areas hit by spring frosts , where yields were below norms .

Vinification went without a hitch and the mood was one of serenity for this vintage wh en the Bourgogne winegrowing region returned to more habitual levels of quality and quantity.

WHITE WINES

From the north to the south of the Bourgogne winegrowing region, opinion is unanimous: The 2017 vintage is one of the most elegant expressions of the Chardonnay grape, with perfectly balanced wines and a wonderful aromatic profile. They are crisp , with notes of citrus and white - fleshed fruit. Aeration triggers the release of h ints of peach and apricot, while in the mouth, minerality and tension balance out this rich, fruit - filled palette. A very fine vintage indeed!

RED WINES

Intense, dazzling colors ranging from ruby to garnet. From first glance, these wines simply invite one to taste them. Notes of red and black berries in these extremely expressive wines are another sign of indulgence, while perfect balance in the mouth comb ined with silky tannins results in a very harmonious ensemble that is subtle and without opulence.

Written Notes

This is restrained to the point of being all but mute and it requires aggressive swirling to liberate the airy and cool yet clearly ripe aromas of various white flowers, citrus and spice elements. There is once again excellent volume and concentration as well as markedly more minerality if somewhat less powerful broad-shouldered flavors that possess fine mid-palate density, all wrapped in a gorgeously long, complex and strikingly harmonious finish. While this too is very clearly built-to-age, it's not so imposing that it couldn't be enjoyed after 5-ish years.
