The Story

Beaune vineyards are the most extensive in the Côte de Beaune region, between Savigny to the North, and Pommard to the South. There are no Grand Cru vineyards in this village, but 36 Premiers Crus. The red wines from the central and southern parts are powerful, tannic, and deeply coloured while those from the northern area are generally less intensely coloured with softer fruit flavours. The Beaune 1er Cru «Clos des Ursules» is a walled in por...

Written Notes

Decanted for 60 minutes. Kept its best characteristics open for 2 hours. A bottle in great shape, full of life and surprises. The surface level of the wine was 4cm. An unbelievably beautiful, deep and bright, dark reddish colour. An open, chocolate and roasted scent full of temptations. A rich, multidimensional and slightly overly mature classic Pinot Noir. A sweetish essence, which is lively and acidic and surprisingly vibrant. The meaty and elegant aftertaste which fills the whole mouth still lingered on long after the glass was emptied. An excellent example of why the durability of Pinot Noir should not be underestimated. A unique experience. 97 points (tasted twice, previously in 2007)

Inside Information

If one had to choose the vineyard most closely identified with the Louis Jadot name, it would certainly be the "Clos des Ursules".
The Beaune vineyards are the most extensive of the Côte de Beaune, between Savigny to the North and Pommard to the South. There are no Grand Cru vineyards in this commune, but 36 Premier Crus. The Beaune ler Cru “Clos des Ursules” is a walled portion of the Beaune ler Cru known as Vignes-Franches. This precious 2,29 hectare vineyard once belonged to the Ursulines, a religious order of nuns who taught the young girls of Beaune.
The Ursulines were originally named “The Company of Saint Ursule”. They owned farms and land, including vineyards, and made their living from the revenue. As with all convents, the property was often bestowed as gifts from the people of the region. In this way, the Ursulines came to own up to 24 hectares of vines, including a tiny plot in the Vignes-Franches vineyard in Beaune, which has today become the Clos des Ursules. It was purchased in 1826 – some 33 years prior to the foundation of the Louis Jadot Company - by Louis Henry Denis Jadot and has since remained the property of the Jadot family. Clos des Ursules vineyard is planted with Pinot Noir grapes at a density of 10.000 vines per hectare and has been gradually replanted since 1954.
Maison Louis Jadot's principles of vinification balance tradition and technology, and focus on the purest expression of the "terroir," or qualities unique to the microclimate, through the medium of the vine. It is Jadot's fundamental conviction that the expression of each wine's origin and typicity resides in interfering with nature as little as possible.
