The Story

Le Montrachet is situated to the south of the Côte de Beaune, on both villages of Puligny Montrachet and Chassagne Montrachet (like the Batard Montrachet Grand Cru). The terroir is extremely chalky with a lot of stones, perfectly drained and easy to overheat with south-south-eastern exposition. The Montrachet is produced with 100% Chardonnay grapes

Written Notes

The 1904 Montrachet, recorked by Jacques Lardière, is an outrageous and decadent Montrachet that has verisimilitude to an aged Sauternes. Slightly deeper in colour than the Montrachet 1898, it has a mellifluous bouquet with clear honey, hazelnut, litchi, tangerine and crème brûlée. The palate is full-bodied and almost viscous in texture. There must have been a hell of a lot of dry extract in this Montrachet, yet it is beautifully balanced with sufficient acidity to cut through that sweet fruit. Turning slightly oxidative towards the finish with roasted walnut and beeswax, it nevertheless has incredible weight for a century-old white wine and lingers tantalizingly on the palate. Tasted at Louis Jadot’s 150th anniversary tasting.
