Wine Spectator - Alison Napjus - August 31, 2015
92 Points "A mouthwatering version, with a creamy mousse and a tangy palate of ripe blackberry, lemon parfait, poached apricot and biscuit, underscored by a thread of smoky mineral and ground spice. Shows beautiful balance. Drink now through 2027."
The Wine Advocate - Stephan Reinhardt - December 02, 2014
94 Points "Pale golden in color, the Roederer 2007 Vintage Brut offers a classic and highly elegant as well as intense and complex bouquet of tea, fruit and floral aromas indicating freshly cracked wheat grain, malt, ripe and slightly cooked apples, lime peels, quince, oranges and roasted almonds. The palate is pure, fresh, mineral, highly elegant, very vinous, complex and persistent. The aging potential is excellent here. "
Wine & Spirits - Joshua Greene - December 01, 2014
95 Points BEST OF THE YEAR "Roederer's exceptional farming comes through in 2007, ripening the fruit for this wine toward yellow apple, feeling fresh and persistent with a luscious, creamy intensity. Notes of cedar and linden add to the wine's perfume, but it's mostly about the grounded connection to the soil. Complete and complex, this may not be a long ager, but it's a pretty great 2007."
Wine Description
The Story
Fascinated by the aromatic diversity of Pinot noir in Champagne, Louis Roederer uses the structure and power of the Pinot noir grapes from the Montagne de Reims to create its Cuvée Vintage. Exposed to the north-east, the grapes mature more slowly. The character of this great wine intensifies and becomes more refined through ageing in wood and time.
Composed of around 70% Pinot noir and 30% Chardonnay, 30% of which is wine matured in oak tuns, the Vintage cuvée is generally matured on lees for 4 years and left for a minimum of 6 months after dégorgement (disgorging) to attain perfect maturity.
The palate is characteristic of Louis Roederer’s vintages: the attack is ample and dense; a rich and winey fullness is refined by the sweetness, acidity and tight blend of the Pinot noir grapes of Verzenay. The ensemble is perfectly integrated into a subtle texture. Tasting reveals sparkling suggestions of candied fruits, almond paste, toast, white chocolate, and carame
Wine Information
HARVESTS
2007 was a mostly warm year, characterised by unexpected and major weather events. A warm spring was followed by a cool summer. Drought had returned by the end of August. The end of the ripening process was excellent, and the harvests took place in ideal conditions.
ELABORATION
70% Pinot noir – 30% Chardonnay – 30% wines matured in wood (oak barrels) with weekly batonnage; no malolactic fermentation.
The Vintage Brut cuvée ages for an average of 4 years in cellars, and also spends 6 months resting after disgorging to complete the maturing process.
Dosage varies between 8 and 10 g/l depending on the vintage.
STYLE
Powerful, subtle and rich.
TASTING
A warm gold robe with light copper highlights.
The slow, regular flow of bubbles is perfectly integrated into the structure of the wine.
The bouquet is rich and heady, with a complex succession of juicy fruits (Williams pears), red fruit (light raspberry liqueur) and nuts (hazelnut). There are even a few hints of lightly roasted cocoa alongside warm notes of pastries and vanilla.
The bite is an explosion of flavours and silky substance. The juicy, fleshy fruits reinforce the soft smooth caress of the Pinot Noir – all with an overwhelming freshness that is wholly part of the wine’s texture, establishing great harmony. The subtle, controlled woodiness adds a sweet sensation, reinforcing the lightly roasted and vanilla flavours – without dominating the Pinot Noir fruit, which remains the focal point of this blend.
This Brut Millésime 2007 is a fine expression of the ‘measured’ power of the Pinot Noir, in a subtle balance of smoothness and richness, instinctively balanced by freshness and lightness.
Vintage 2007
An unusually warm spring led to early flowering and initial optimism, which soon gave way to disappointment following one of the murkiest summers on record. Overall, 2007 was a difficult vintage saved by last-minute sunshine in late-August. Mildew and rot were the main culprits of the harvest, and the level of gluconic acid rocketed. The harvest began early, on August 24th, and was abundant in volume averaging 14,242 kg/ha. Pinot Meunier posed the biggest problems and Chardonnay clearly outperformed the rest. Many of the iconic prestige cuvée blanc de blancs were successfully produced, such as Taittinger Comtes de Champagne, Ruinart Dom Ruinart, Billecart-Salmon Cuvée Louis and Salon Le Mesnil. Some blended prestige cuvées such as Louis Roederer Cristal and Philipponnat Clos des Goisses were also made. Champagnes from 2007 are typically high in acidity and restrainedly classic in style, but lack the spine and strength of the greatest harvest years. Even if the vintage only receives three stars, its best Chardonnays are well worth seeking and storing.
