Wine Enthusiast - Roger Voss - December 01, 2013

95 Points "This wine is so crisp and piercingly direct in its acidity and minerality. On the palate, apples are fringed with grapefruit and white currant flavors, with a texture that tight and edgy. Although hints of toast peek through, the wine is still young, so hold and don’t drink before 2016."

International Wine Cellar - Josh Raynolds - December 01, 2013

92 Points "Complex, mineral-tinged bouquet evokes dried citrus fruits, green apple, fresh flowers and anise. Dry and racy on entry, then fleshier in the mid-palate, offering lively citrus and orchard fruit flavors and a hint of melon. A toasty note emerges with air and carries through the long, smooth, ginger-accented finish. Very attractive and fruit-driven now but I suspect that a couple more years of more bottle age will bring benefits."

Wine & Spirits - Joshua Greene - December 01, 2013

90 Points "Fragrant with green lime and heirloom apple scents, this is a vintage powered by acidity. Its tart citrus flavors develop delicacy and grace as they open with air. Youthfully tight, this needs several years in bottle to show its best."

vinousmedia.com - Antonio Galloni - November 01, 2013

91 Points "The 2007 Blanc de Blancs is gorgeous. Almonds, green apples, pears and white flowers are some of the many notes that meld together in this deeply expressive, resonant Blanc de Blancs. The 2007 is open and soft, suggesting it is best enjoyed sooner rather than later. This is a classy, super-refined Champagne from Roederer."

The Story

From 1830 onwards, the House of Louis Roederer acquired extensive knowledge of the terroirs and plot-by-plot vinification, and mastered the effervescence. In the heart of the Côte des Blancs, where the Chardonnay grapes attain optimal maturity on the calcareous soils, Louis Roederer has selected two exceptional grands crus: Mesnil-sur-Oger and Avize, whose unique characteristics and complementarity enable the House to produce taut, highly aromatic wines that have finesse.

100% Chardonnay, the Blanc de Blancs Vintage cuvée is generally matured on lees for five years and left for a minimum of 6 months after dégorgement (disgorging) to attain perfect maturity.

In the mouth, the attack is typically Chardonnay—it is smooth and delicate, and markedly sweet. Slightly sweetened floral notes and white fruit and dried fruit notes are combined with the almost chalky minerality of the Côte des Blancs. The texture has notes of sugared almond, a sensation that is strengthened by a soft effervescence that envelops the mouth. This is followed by an impression of finesse, elegance, and freshness, strengthened by suggestions of fresh mint and basil.

Vintage 2007

An unusually warm spring led to early flowering and initial optimism, which soon gave way to disappointment following one of the murkiest summers on record. Overall, 2007 was a difficult vintage saved by last-minute sunshine in late-August. Mildew and rot were the main culprits of the harvest, and the level of gluconic acid rocketed. The harvest began early, on August 24th, and was abundant in volume averaging 14,242 kg/ha. Pinot Meunier posed the biggest problems and Chardonnay clearly outperformed the rest. Many of the iconic prestige cuvée blanc de blancs were successfully produced, such as Taittinger Comtes de Champagne, Ruinart Dom Ruinart, Billecart-Salmon Cuvée Louis and Salon Le Mesnil. Some blended prestige cuvées such as Louis Roederer Cristal and Philipponnat Clos des Goisses were also made. Champagnes from 2007 are typically high in acidity and restrainedly classic in style, but lack the spine and strength of the greatest harvest years. Even if the vintage only receives three stars, its best Chardonnays are well worth seeking and storing.
