The Story

In 1876 when Tsar Alexander II requested that a special cuvée be created for his court Roederer duly obliged, creating what many regard to be the first prestige cuvée.

As the political situation in Russia was somewhat unstable, Tsar Alexander feared assassination. He ordered that Champagne bottles be made of clear glass, so that he could see the bubbles and to prevent anyone from hiding a bomb within, as could easily happen with a typical ...

Wine Information

In 1876, a Roederer champagne made for Russia’s Tsar Alexander II became the world’s first luxury cuvée. But with the sudden collapse of the Russian market, the champagne house endured a long struggle on the verge of bankruptcy. Eventually, the family’s shrewd patriarchs managed to turn things around, and today, Roederer is the most solvent of Champagne’s houses; indeed, its future looks Cristal clear.

Written Notes

The 1964 Louis Roederer Cristal is a brilliant expression of a superb vintage, marked by a hot and dry growing season that produced ripe, full-bodied, and long-lived wines. The nose opens with a rich and complex bouquet, featuring notes of baked apple, toasted brioche, and dried apricot, intertwined with subtle hints of honey and roasted almonds.

On the palate, the wine is full and opulent, with flavors of ripe stone fruits, creamy lemon curd, and a whisper of vanilla. The Pinot Noir's power and structure are beautifully balanced by the Chardonnay's freshness and finesse. A fine, persistent effervescence adds to the wine’s luxurious texture. The finish is long and refined, with a lingering minerality and a graceful, slightly nutty aftertaste.

There's something magical about Cristal. Every vintage from the 1960s is wonderful and stylish. I wonder if the '64 isn't the best of them all. Here we find all the usual points: the sweet toffee tone, the creaminess, and the amazing balanced fruit. The seductive flow is supported this time by a La Tâche-like Pinot depth, which is unmatched anywhere else. Believe it or not, the most recent bottle was too young!

The nose was tangy and waxy with baked, yellow fruits - baked in a mature way; not cooked, just baked. There were additional aromas of bread along with traces of light caramel. The palate was beautiful: smooth, long and fine with nice elegance in the mouth. Bread flavors and that same touch of dry caramel kissed the palate. Its backside was long and lingering with another kiss, this time of citrus flavors. Amanda picked up on its caramel as well, and the '64 held gracefully in the glass

Another nine days bottle, golden, still a fine Champagne, but oxidized (after beeing opened for such a length) and good enough still, and a long length. 88

Light yellow straw colour. Intense, lightly smoky with great citrus support nose. Gently smoky nose and very fresh white flowers. Right now dominates fresh flowery-mineral-smoky notes with a dash of howthorn and very ripe citrus fruits. Very fresh and elegant in the mouth. Massive concentration, but everything built on elegance. Great fruity finish with excellent wrap of tingled minerality. So fresh and youthful!! And fruits are not tired at all- they are massive and exploiding!! Endless finish and great complexity. Seems even younger than recenly atsted Mgn. 96+
