The Story

In order for grapes to be used in the creation of a great rosé champagne, they have to attain perfect maturity, which is sometimes difficult to achieve in the changeable Champagne climate. This is why Louis Roederer decided to invest in the vineyards at Cumières, where the shallow calcareous clay soil, which is on south-facing slopes bathed in the light reflected from the banks of the river Marne, enables the grapes to attain optimum phenolic maturity.

A blend of around 65% Pinot noir and 35% Chardonnay, 20% of which is wine matured in oak tuns, the Rosé Vintage cuvée is generally matured on lees for 4 years and left for a minimum of 6 months after dégorgement (disgorging) to attain perfect maturity.

The wine has fruity aromas of wild red berries, followed by floral notes, and the sugary and spicy fragrance of zest; and the aromas of dried fruit and cocoa result from the wine’s vinifying in oak tuns. Rich and full-bodied, the Rosé Vintage exalts the maturity of the fruit. A sparkling wine with an initial impression of freshness, it opens smoothly with almost exotic notes, combined with the pure minerality of the Chardonnay grapes.

Wine Information

Champagne Rosé 2016 from Louis Roederer is elegant, well balanced and very fresh. A real Classic ! This vintage reveals the juicy flesh of Pinots Noirs, refined and stretched by the freshness of Chardonnays from Chouilly.

This cuvée is elaborated from a blend composed of 62% Pinot Noir and 38% Chardonnay. 11% of the wines is vinified in wood casks. Cuvée Rosé vintage has been raised on lees for 4 years, and benefits from a rest of a minimum period of 6 months after disgorgement, thus perfecting its maturity.

The effervescence is very fine. The nose offers a complex structure dominated by mint, acidulous fruits, strawberries and raspberries. There’s also spicy and smoked aromas, typical from the Pinot Noirs and Cumières, followed by nuts, grilled almonds and cocoa beans.
On the palate, it is very soft and unctuous first, while being very fresh and sharp. The overall sensation is of a great freshness, balanced and lightness. The final seems to be infinite.

Vintage 2016

This year trialled the growers with many climatic hazards from excessive rainfalls to frosts, downy mildew, hail, draught and, finally, sunburn. A cool spring saw late-April frost, which cut volumes early on. Mildew was an issue throughout the region (especially in the Côte des Bar), equally diminishing volumes. July and August were then hot and very dry months and the resultant sunburn reduced the yields further. Ripening was uneven, and Chardonnay especially needed time and was thus considered the most difficult variety for the vintage. Overall volumes were down to 9,163 kg/ha, offering balanced wines with an average potential alcohol of 9.9% and total acidity of 7.4g/l. Fruit-forward, lush wines with vibrant acidity.
