The Story

Cristal Rosé was first born a hundred years after the original Cristal, in 1974. It is an intriguing and particular prestige cuvée rosé, as it has the palest colour, yet a contrastingly fleshy, fruity, well-built palate of amazing freshness. Its secret is in the 60 per cent Pinot Noir from two hectares of Roederer’s own old-vine vineyards in Aÿ, Bonotte-Pierre-Robert and La Côte du Moulin, which are now cultivated according to biodynamic princ...

Vintage 1988

CHAMPAGNE: From this year, the most classic and refined champagnes were producedChampagnes are long-lived and mature slowly to their peak.

Winter and spring were fairly mild. Inflorescences began in good weather in June. Already during the next month, the cloud masses swarmed to the Champagne province. Written Notes

There is a finesse and crystal-clear elegance that makes me happy. This rosé reminds me very much of the white '89, with its perfect balance, crackling acidity, and irresistible aromatic purity. A wonderful gift from the Royal Ballet's premier dancer, Brendan Collins. Best “Party Champagne” ever produced, according to the Millennium Tasting. Slightly less fascinating in a perhaps not perfectly stored case lately. The development is slightly too rapid in comparison with what I was expecting, and while the wine has indeed gained in strength and depth, it has lost too much in elegance.

Roederer, which is one of the few producers in Champagne vinifying the rosés by the saignée method has again managed to macerate a beautiful light salmon rose colour to this unique champagne. Very delightful nose with strawberries and biscuits, also hints of toastiness. Very crisp light-bodied wine with persistent and mouth-capturing mousse reflects a marked minerality and lovely brioche flavours that are enhanced by delicate strawberry aromas. Long, lingering finish.
