The Story

In 1876 when Tsar Alexander II requested that a special cuvée be created for his court Roederer duly obliged, creating what many regard to be the first prestige cuvée.

As the political situation in Russia was somewhat unstable, Tsar Alexander feared assassination. He ordered that Champagne bottles be made of clear glass, so that he could see the bubbles and to prevent anyone from hiding a bomb within, as could easily happen with a typical ...

Written Notes

Perhaps a little thinner than usual, but it contains the entire range of aromas. The lovely nose includes elements of lilies, apricot, and nut chocolate. Very reminiscent of the lovely Dom Pérignon from the same vintage with Domain-roasted coffee overtones. Certain bottles are however starting to wilt.

A 1978 Louis Roederer Cristal was a rare treat; it is a vintage that has mostly been consumed and not collected, but it held up well. It was much more mature than the ’82, a sign of the ‘82s quality, and ready to go. There was still some light spritz here, and mature carob and caramel flavors. Rob called it ‘clean,’ although I found a bit of back alley water to it along with garden flavors.

Bottle with normal size. Looking amber, gold and bright. Intense, refined and charming on the nose. The taste is harmonious, elegant, refined, fresh, concentrated and dry. With caramel, mushrooms and toasty flavor.
