The Story

Échezeaux is loyal to its appellation through the finesse of its attack on the palate and its overall balance. But it's also a wine with pronounced acidity, which gives it freshness and structure and bestows upon it a sometimes austere finish.

Written Notes

Tasted from Magnum directly at the Domaine.

The full wine name of course is Echezeaux Les Rouges du Bas. To make things clear I am not known for excessive use of highest ratings and this is the first time here that I will rate a wine as perfect. I have not tasted a better Burgundy this year and perhaps not in 2017 as well.

2003 as one of the hottest years ever has provided us with "untypical" wines in most European wine regions. In Burgundy a lot of Pinot Noirs tasted like Rhône wines, often the wines had overripe, boiled fruit and harsh, dry tannins. The 2003 Echezeaux Les Rouges du Bas has not a single fault. The bouquet is extremely seductive, loads of red and dark berries, spices, plums, milk chocolate, tea. Perhaps these flavours fill the air in Eden. Medium-bodied it has an amazing freshness and it is mineral driven, the tannins are ripe and soft, the fine acidity underlines the perfect fruit. Perfect balance, elegance, finesse and great length, I could stay with this wine until the end of days without missing anything else. Thanks to Jean-Nicolas Méo for this exceptional wine.
