The Story

Of all the villages of the Côte de Nuits, Morey-Saint-Denis is one of the most fruitful in terms of the number of its Grands Crus. The Clos de Tart, which remains a solely-held entity, was founded by the Cistercians of Tart in 1141. Since that date, it has been owned by only three families. The Clos Saint-Denis came on the scene in the 11th century, thanks to the fortress of Vergy. 1990 VINTAGE in Burgundy

This is probably the vintage of reference for many people in Burgundy. Exceptional climatic conditions allowed an abundant crop to mature perfectly and yield some most sensational wines in both red and white. Written Notes

Vibrant and bright ruby. Edge of something burnt on the nose. Loose and sweet and a little bit, well, tarty. Then some rather rustic tannins. Not great intensity and purity. Not graceful though it makes an impact like a boxer. Sweetness is sort of bolted on rather than integral to the wine. Hot finish. Too high a yield then, according to Sylvain Pitiot. A big disappointment considering the vintage's reputation.

The ripe opulent vintage is apparent in this pale ruby garnet coloured wine. This wine has a seamless texture, sweet fruit profile and is powerful from beginning to end. The flavours are vibrant and lively with sweet red-berry fruits and an opulent texture followed by a long sweet finish. Very impressive wine.

  • 97p

Full, mature colour. Very lovely, fully mature, spicy/aromatic nose with a touch of residual dry tannin. Complex and perfumed on the palate. Harmonious, especially on the finish. Fresh, balanced and multi-dimensional. Lovely. But the wines today are even better.
