Robert Parker - 97+ points The 2009 Hermitage La Chapelle is easily the greatest, most profound La Chapelle since the 1990. Most of this cuvee comes from Le Meal and Les Bessards vineyards, with a touch of Les Roucoules fruit in the blend. It is an opaque purple-colored wine with enormous concentration in addition to an extraordinary bouquet of graphite, creme de cassis, blackberries, licorice, beef blood and a touch of smoked game. The Story

In the heart of the Rhône Valley, this small chapel has become one of the world’s great historic buildings
La Chapelle, the jewel of Maison Jaboulet, has a rich and emotive history.
During the 13th century, a knight called Gaspard de Sterimberg settled in the hills of Tain l’Hermitage with the permission of Blanche de Castille. On his return from the crusades, he sought calm and serenity and isolated himself as a hermit, hence the name of t...

Wine Information

More than the heat, the striking factor of vintage 2009 was the drought – only 131mm of rains fell between April and September. Fortunately, however, the autumn and winter of 2008/2009 was particularly rainy and cold, allowing the groundwater to retain good levels of fresh water. This vintage took place under exemplary conditions overall.

Written Notes

Dark blackish purplish crimson. Bloody and savoury on the nose. The fruit here – at last – is in the ascendancy over the fruit. Massively palate-coating oak. You can see how the magnificence of this at triumphing over new oak must have inspired them to treat all the fruit as though it had this ability. Very fine indeed. One of those wines where you can hardly imagine it is simple fermented grape juice. What talent! And it’s all in the fruit, not the winemaking. Great freshness as well as power and majesty. Suave and certainly not earthy, but it should eventually emerge as a great mature wine – though it would be a terrible shame to drink it too early, however seductive it is already. Not a brute! Streets ahead of the rest of the range.

Good looking normal size bottle. Colour is purple and and looking dark. On the nose it is open, intense, youthful, complex, ripe and tempting. The taste is full, round, harmonious, elegant, silky, ripe, with silky tannins, and average in acidity, full-bodied, with balanced, well-structured and well-integrated structure. On the palate it is layered and has spice, licorice, blueberry and blackberry flavours. The finish is long, smooth, lingering, flavorful and spicy. This wine is impressive. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 10-15 years and decant at least over 4h before tasting.
