Wine Information

History:
To revive its past tradition, Maison Paul Jaboulet Ainé decided in 2006 to produce la Chapelle white again, a tradition that had died out in 1962 (after a very great vintage, however!)

Soil:
Produced only from Jaboulet's 'terroir des Rocoules' estate.

Grape Variety:
80% Marsanne 20% Rousanne.

Age of the vines:
35 years.

Vinification:
Harvested by hand into 25 kg crates, then pressed directly so as to minimise the danger of oxidation, the wines are vinified in casks so as to promote careful oxidation of the wine.

Ageing:
Malolactic fermentation occurs in casks and stirring enables suspension of the lees: this stabilises the wine and increases the mouth weight and aromatic complexity.

Yield:
30hl/ha.

Tasting:
Colour:Brilliant and intense yellow with green hues, limpid and bright.
Bouquet: Complex nose with aromas of white fruit and pears. Mineral notes dominate the lightly honeyed and 'confit' aspects that will enrich the range of aromas as the wine develops.
Palate: Elegant in the mouth with a surprising aromatic length. The vivacity of the wine balances well with an exceptional full-bodiedness, giving this great wine its tremendous richness and fabulous ageing potential.

Matching Food and Wine:
Truffle risotto
Bresse chicken with cream
Lobster ravioli with artichokes

Serving Temperature:
12 to 14°.

Written Notes

La Chapelle In the heart of the Rhône Valley, this small chapel has become one of the world’s great historic buildings La Chapelle, the jewel of Maison Jaboulet, has a rich and emotive history. During the 13th century, a knight called Gaspard de Sterimberg settled in the hills of Tain l’Hermitage with the permission of Blanche de Castille. On his return from the crusades, he sought calm and serenity and isolated himself as a hermit, hence the name of the Hermitage appellation. There he built a Chapel, overlooking the Rhône Valley. La Chapelle endured the passage of time and finally became the property of Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné in 1919. Hermitage “La Chapelle” is a blend of terroirs, including the prestigious hillsides of Méal and Bessards. Each one provides its own aromatic characteristics, as well as an elegant tannin structure, giving the wine great ageing potential. Since the legendary 1961 vintage, which was classed as one of the Twelve mythical wines of the 20th century, Hermitage “la Chapelle” has become one of the world’s most sought-after wines. Its fame has led Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné to revive a historical tradition by producing a few bottles of 2006 “la Chapelle” white wine.
