Vintage 2021

2021 Barossa Valley Vintage Report

Following two particularly dry seasons, many were hoping for Mother Nature to be much kinder, and mostly she was. Winter rainfall in 2020 recorded 148mm, the same as winter 2019, (22% below average). Written Notes

Always amazes me that there are not far more wines like this. It almost seems that to make such a wine means that you can’t be a serious winemaker, which is, of course, complete rubbish. A well-made, flavoursome lighter style red, which can take a few hours in the fridge to advantage, surely has widespread appeal. Hopefully, we’ll be seeing many more of them in the coming years (and the winemakers can also continue to make their big, blokey reds so as not to lose their card-carrying winemaker privileges).

This is deep, dark purple in colour. Exuberant and spicy on the nose with notes of black fruits, cassis, raspberries, chocolate and licorice. Attractive, this is full-flavoured even if a lighter style. Simple, supple, a good flick of acidity helps carry everything to a mid-length finish. Chill a bottle this summer and then drink up and enjoy. Our friends at St Hallett’s suggest that it can be used for sangria. Now such sacrilege might cost a winemaker his card! It deserves better. 90.
