Vintage 2009

Near-optimum rainfall over winter, followed by dry, mild conditions over spring provided a good environment for budburst and an ideal start to the growing season with canopies developing well. Climatic conditions favoured flowering and set with mild and calm weather, however there was some shatter in Shiraz across parts of the state resulting in small crops for many regions. Written Notes

From a vineyard that was first planted in 1998, so not that old, but the team at St H cottoned on to the fact that, right from the start, the fruit from this vineyard was fabulous stuff. The owner, Anthony Scholz, won the award for 2011 'Vigneron of the Year' and the fruit from here is the basis of the wonderful St H Blackwell Shiraz. Not only is the vineyard in the midst of others that are often used for Penfold's Grange, but this particular vineyard is also used by both Henschke and John Duval. Not a bad pedigree. The wine is tighter and more coiled and brooding than most in this series. Terrific concentration and more tannins than the others. Attractive spice notes. Big and ripe, but most importantly, well balanced. It does need a few years to reach its full potential. Worth noting the team at St Hallett see the 2009 vintage as a floral year, while 2008 is much more of a grunt year. They found that those parts of the Barossa that ripened later did the best. In world terms, sensational value. Most likely to be found at the cellar door. $40 93
