Parker 92 / The NV Brut Premier Cru Cuvee Rubis flows from the glass with sensual layers of perfumed fruit, showing stunning detail, clarity and purity. This vivid, multi-dimensional Champagne is full of nuance, not to mention class. It is simply wonderful and is not to be missed. The Brut Premier Cru Cuvee Rubis is 90% Pinot Noir (including 15% still Pinot) and 10% Chardonnay (equal parts 2006 and 2005 vintages), aged in medium-sized barrels. Disgorged: December, 2008. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2016.

Proprietor Laurent Champs makes some of the most elegant, refined wines in Champagne. All of the wines are aged in oak ranging from large, neutral casks to small barriques, some of which are new for the top selections. Few producers have been able to find such impeccable balance using oak. A hint of Ramonet here, a suggestion of Leflaive there....simply put, these are majestic wines that no one who l

The Story

Blend: 90% Pinot Noir (including 15% red wine) and 10% Chardonnay classified Premier Cru

Ageing: 10 months in large oak casks. No malolactic fermentation.

Dosage: 9 g/l

Tasting notes:  The colour of this wine is salmon pink. It is animated by a persistent effervescence that gives birth to a cord with fine and delicate bubbles. This wine develops aromas of intense red fruits, including wild strawberries, wild raspberries, cherries and gooseberries. After a few minutes of aeration, a light floral fragrance awakens our senses with notes of linden and lilac. On the palate, the attack of red fruits is predominant and supported by the freshness of pink grapefruit. Delicate flavours of melon and vine peach enliven our taste buds during the tasting. The whole makes us discover a wine of great freshness, ample and very balanced.

Written Notes

The NV Cuvée Rubis, a blend of 2014 and 2013, is unusually strict and severe. Those are not bad qualities at all, but this edition is especially focused and pulsing with energy. The cranberry, white flowers, grapefruit and white pepper notes are finely cut. In many years, I find the Cuvée Rubis to be airy and even a touch diffuse, but in this release, the wine is finely etched and sculpted, not to mention a huge overachiever. I loved it. The Rubis is 90% Pinot Noir (of which about 15% is still red wine) and 10% Chardonnay. Disgorged November 2016. Dosage is 9 grams per liter.
