The Story

The St. Andrews range is named after the historic property first established by Scottish immigrants in 1892. For forty years St. Andrews was one of the leading wine producers in the Clare Valley but sadly, ceased operating when it was sold in 1934. Bill Taylor quickly recognised the potential of the adjacent St. Andrews property when he was first establishing his vineyards in the Clare Valley, and wanted to make it a part of the family's estat...

St Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 –

Before the more recent introduction of such limited production wines as the Visionary and the Legacy (as much as I love the team at Taylors, releasing a wine with a price tag of a thousand bucks, no matter how good it is, seems a bit of a push – people whinge about the price of Grange and Hill of Grace, yet they have had many decades to build their reputation and credibility, and it would be nice to see this wine do the same before it costs you your first born), it was the St Andrews range which held prestige position at this always impressive (and usually great value) Clare winery. Don’t ignore this impressive range. These are premium wines at excellent prices. And both these cracking reds are compelling evidence of that, to which the large swag of bling they have both collected also attests.

This Cabernet enjoyed extended skin contact before it was pressed into a mix of fine-grained French oak barrels, 40% of which were new, for a period of 18 months. Near opaque in colour, this is the more austere of the two St Andrews reds. Black fruits are found here, with tobacco leaf notes, chocolate and dry vegetation. Well structured, this would be the choice for the long haul. A classic Clare Cab. The palate saw the emergence of dry herbs, sage, cold tea and more dark berry notes. All is underpinned by juicy acidity. Good length here, with a gentle fade through to silky tannins. Definitely a long future here. 95.

Robust is putting it mildly – this Taylors St Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
is a beast.Minty, firm and uncompromising, with oak lifting up the palate, but tannins squaring it off again. Very Taylors, very Clare Valley. Wine for the future, no doubt, but it feels tough and ungenerous now. Length is great, so really the future is assured, but gee it’s a raw wine now.

Best drinking: come back in 5 years and drink over the next 20. 17/20, 90/100+. 14.5%, $70. Taylors website. Would I buy it? Not yet.
