AUSTRALIA VINTAGE REPORT: The 2017 winegrape crush is estimated to be 1.93 million tonnes, based on responses received by the Wine Sector Survey 2017. This crush is 5 per cent higher than the 2016 final crush figure of 1.84 million tonnes (Department of Agriculture and Water Resources – Levies recorded figure). St Andrews Shiraz 2017 – 

 

Clare Shiraz rarely gets the love and attention is so deserves, which might explain why a stunner like this will not break the bank. The winemaking team left a portion of the juice to ferment in what they term ‘headless American oak barrels’, where it was left to soak on skins for two weeks. After that, the wine spent a further 20 months in American oak barrels. This release seems to exhibit a slight re-direction of the style, to more of a relatively elegant style, though still chock full of flavour, than the blockbusters that preceded it. It works. 

This is a deep red/magenta. A powerful nose, but everything remains in balance. Dry herbs, chocolate, black fruits and leather. Some appealing and intriguing complexity here. The palate is seamless, and yet intense, through to the silky finish, with underlying acidity supporting the wine. Delicatessen notes and coffee grinds emerge on the palate. The oak is there, but kept in check. Great focus and excellent length. This has ten to fifteen years ahead of it. 95.
