The Story

The terraces of the Kamptal are characterised by their barren primary rock soils (which, on the lower terraces, are covered with loess and loam), and the climate: the vineyards are located at an altitude of between 200 and 300 meters at the crossroads of the Danube valley and Kamptal. Due to the ample daily warmth, the grapes enjoy ripeness and fullness, while the suction effect of the Kamptal during the evening and night brings the cool air from the north - the Waldviertel - down into the the vineyards to preserve the freshness and fruitiness.

Tasting note: A whole bouquet of white and yellow flowers (elder-acacia) rises immediately to the nose but also grapy flavors with a twist of lemon peel, followed by some mineral and yeasty tones, dry and lovely fresh on the palate, very pure, fragrant and again striking with its light fruit tones like fresh vineyard peaches, also a crisp acidity backbone that highlights some spice and minerals, elegant, slender, perfect in its youth for the summerly terraces but with potential for further maturing to a complete text book Riesling.

Written Notes

The 2020 Kamptal Riesling Terrassen is quite reductive on the nose that shows a concentrated white stone fruit aroma. Racy-piquant, bone-dry and crisp on the palate, this is a very tight and still closed Riesling with freaky grip and tension. Just ripe, I would say, but salty and crisp on the finish. Bottled in April this year. Tasted from lot 9004 in June 2021. Drink 2023-2029. – Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate 86+p (Dec 2021)
