The Story

From 1830 onwards, the House of Louis Roederer acquired extensive knowledge of the terroirs and plot-by-plot vinification, and mastered the effervescence. In the heart of the Côte des Blancs, where the Chardonnay grapes attain optimal maturity on the calcareous soils, Louis Roederer has selected two exceptional grands crus: Mesnil-sur-Oger and Avize, whose unique characteristics and complementarity enable the House to produce taut, highly aromatic wines that have finesse.

100% Chardonnay, the Blanc de Blancs Vintage cuvée is generally matured on lees for five years and left for a minimum of 6 months after dégorgement (disgorging) to attain perfect maturity.

In the mouth, the attack is typically Chardonnay—it is smooth and delicate, and markedly sweet. Slightly sweetened floral notes and white fruit and dried fruit notes are combined with the almost chalky minerality of the Côte des Blancs. The texture has notes of sugared almond, a sensation that is strengthened by a soft effervescence that envelops the mouth. This is followed by an impression of finesse, elegance, and freshness, strengthened by suggestions of fresh mint and basil.

Vintage 2002

A cold winter and a mild late spring cued for a perfect June allowing early and fast flowering. Outstanding weather conditions prevailed and the season went on without dramatic turns. Rains in August raised concerns regarding gray rot, but finally sunshine and dry conditions throughout September resulted in an abundant crop of largely healthy fruit (11,930 kg/ha). Dehydration due to wind further aided in achieving perfect ripeness and additional concentration. This, and the cool nights, helped in retaining fresh acidity and, despite the ripeness (10.3% potential alcohol), the wines did not suffer from heaviness or a lack of life. A near-perfect vintage, which produced balanced Champagnes consistently around the region. The best show an impeccable combination of freshness, power, structure and finesse. However, some have matured aromatically quicker than expected and are already past their peak. 2002 produced an abundance of spectacular champagnes, such as Dom Pérignon (the entire range), Krug Vintage and Clos du Mesnil, Piper-Heidsieck Rare, Louis Roederer Cristal and Cristal Rosé, Ruinart Dom Ruinart and Dom Ruinart Rosé, Salon Le Mesnil and Taittinger Comtes de Champagne, to name a few.

Written Notes

Much more straightforwardly seductive than the ordinary vintage wine, recently released as it is. A sublime aroma of white lilies, vanilla, lemon pie, coconut and acacia. Pure and elegant with a satiny caress from start to finish.

Appearance: Yellow with light green-gold highlights. Fine mouse with regular, persistent bubbles.

Nose: Clean and fragrant bouquet of  fresh, vigorous, subtle aromas: white flower (Acacia), fruit (citrus, apple), fresh almonds, light spices, and a wisp of caramel, hinting that some of the wines composing the blend of this Blanc de Blancs have been fermented in wood.

Palate: A velvety attack, with rich, smooth texture, typical of Louis Roederer.  Enhanced by soft effervescence, this great wine reveals a perfectly balanced structure, both creamy and aerial. It almost tickles the palate with clean, fine and precise texture, strengthened on the finish by the light bitter taste of fresh almonds, and the softness of ripe, lightly caramelised apples.

This Blanc de Blancs combines finesse and vinosity: it expresses with subtlety and refinement all the qualities of freshness, roundness and precision, characteristic of the best Chardonnays in Champagne.
