The Story

The chateau makes three different wines. The so-called grand vin, that is Château Latour itself, a second wine called Les Forts de Latour and a third wine simply called Pauillac. The grand vin comes from the original part of the vineyards, called the Enclos. This is the most prestigious part of the vineyard where the vines have a fine view of the Gironde estuary. The tradition in Bordeaux says that vines that overlook the water make the best w...

Wine Information

1928 Château Latour (Pauillac)

The 1928 vintage was excellent for Latour. Weather conditions were encouraging during the whole summer. Big heatwave before and during the harvesting of the very sound and fully ripe grapes. At Latour they made 85 casks of wine. This was for a long time infamous for being an overly tannic wine. However it has mellowed marvellously now.

Excellent Château-bottling. Level was high-shoulder. Dark, deep red colo...

Vintage 1928

The weather conditions in Bordeaux during the 1928 growing season played a pivotal role in shaping the vintage. The year started with a mild winter, followed by a warm and dry spring that allowed for an early budbreak and flowering.

Written Notes

If there were a “king of the business” in 1928, it would have to be the 1928 Latour.  While the Latour was clearly the longest wine of the flight, it was also much more elegant than I remembered.  Of course, at this age, there is so much bottle variation, even within the realm of positive experiences, which this certainly was.  Its acidity really stood out, and this high-pitched Latour definitely hit a high note, just not as high as the Palmer (96).

I have tasted Latour 1928 5 times in the 1990´s, also quite a few times during 2000's and it has always been a first-class claret (all the bottles has scored 95-98 points). On the last occasion in 2016 it was still very vigorous and a lovely wine, maybe even better than ever before. Excellent looking bottle with top shoulder level. Decanted for tone hour. Very vigour and deep, bright color. Rich, ripe, even fresh and open nose with earthy and black fruit and truffle flavors. Well balanced as always, rich and full wine, which has been developing beautifully throughout the last 30 years, getting hold of even more intensity and complexity. It is now a multi dimensional, fat, thick, chocolaty wine with long, attractive, slightly tannic aftertaste. Generous and a mouthful of wine. 99 points

Good looking bottle, in an excellent condition and has bottom neck level. Colour is brownish and mature. On the nose it is complex, ripe and round, required a short 15 minutes to really open up, however 45 minutes in the wine decided to fall apart. The taste multi-dimensional, pure tertiary flavour, good texture structure and very mature. The finish is just never ended. So smooth. This wine is a masterpiece and a fine example of the great twin years. Drink up now. Unbelievebly fresh for its age, amongst our group that blind tasted the wine, we all thought the wine was from the 60's or so. Fasinating wine with beautiful history.

Inside Information

Purchased from the Nicolas cellars, this bottle of 1928 Latour was absolute perfection. The wine exhibited an astonishing bouquet of hickory wood, smoke, walnuts, and gobs of sweet black truffle and raspberry-scented fruit. Full-bodied, with layers of sweet, expansive fruit, with no hard edges, this large-scaled wine still possesses phenomenal flavor concentration, as well as marvelous aromatic and flavor dimension. One of the great wines of the century, it is a winemaking tour de force! It revealed little tannin and appeared completely mature. I found it to be in superb condition at 65-years of age, so who among us would argue that it will not last another 20-25 years?
