A very classic, pure, well-defined vintage. On the border between the 2004 and the 2006, it joins a beautiful series of very good quality vintages. This classicism is obviously best expressed in the Grand Vin, which is severe but also rich and intense. A great deal of class and nobility in this wine.

The Story

The chateau makes three different wines. The so-called grand vin, that is Château Latour itself, a second wine called Les Forts de Latour and a third wine simply called Pauillac. The grand vin comes from the original part of the vineyards, called the Enclos. This is the most prestigious part of the vineyard where the vines have a fine view of the Gironde estuary. The tradition in Bordeaux says that vines that overlook the water make the best w...

Written Notes

The 2008 Latour is dark, brooding and virile, with huge tannins that convey an impression of gravitas. Grilled herbs, leather, sweet pipe tobacco, iron and cedar add to the wine's distinctive aromatic complexity. There is plenty of density and richness, but the color and slightly advanced flavor profile are a bit out of character. Ideally, at this stage Latour should exhibit more freshness and vibrancy. Of course, it is possible the 2008 might remain at this plateau for many years to come. Time will tell. The blend is 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot and drops of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. 93/Drink: 2019-2038.

2008 Latour displayed truffles on the nose, was very stylish with great structure, complexity, tobacco and grilled bacon flavours, and very long finish. Classic wine for the property. 96+p.

Ruby, cassis, intense, leather notes, just like Mouton, a bit closed now, last bottle, only three months ago, was more open. Has a refined feel to it, regal. Gorgeous acidity, ripe tannins, superb length.
