The Story

The chateau makes three different wines. The so-called grand vin, that is Château Latour itself, a second wine called Les Forts de Latour and a third wine simply called Pauillac. The grand vin comes from the original part of the vineyards, called the Enclos. This is the most prestigious part of the vineyard where the vines have a fine view of the Gironde estuary. The tradition in Bordeaux says that vines that overlook the water make the best w...

Wine Information

After a particularly wet winter and spring, May and June were sunny, allowing the flowers to develop without any problems. A hot, dry July encouraged good growth. August was cooler but remained dry. The grapes therefore ripened in very good conditions; some rain late September refreshed them, and relieved the strain on the vines after the long dry period. The harvests took place from 4 to 18 October, confirming the delayed nature of the 1979 v...

Vintage 1979

Bordeaux / The year 1979 partly repeated the 1978 vintage with a wet and cool spring, a hot summer, a cool and dry autumn. Written Notes

Dark red. Had intense nose and palate of ripe blackcurrants with delicious sweetness, spicy fruit. Strong tannin, which however wasn't allowed to dominate. It was meaty wine with splendid structure and long aftertaste. All in all, it was an extremely successful wine in one of the so-called lesser vintages. This wine should be able to entertain us in additional 5-7 years.

Deep ruby with broad brick rim. Chocolate, hints of mint leaves, leather, some cherries, bell peppers, cigars and blackcurrants. Soft attack, fresh acidity, ripe tannins, well balanced, coffee and a bit dark chocolate bitter in the long finish with some citrus feel to it. Different and surprising. 90
