The chateau makes three different wines. The so-called grand vin, that is Château Latour itself, a second wine called Les Forts de Latour and a third wine simply called Pauillac. The grand vin comes from the original part of the vineyards, called the Enclos. This is the most prestigious part of the vineyard where the vines have a fine view of the Gironde estuary. 1789, das Jahr der französischen Revolution, kann kein schlechtes Weinjahr gewesen sein.
Als ich im November 2004 vor mir ein Glas mit einem älteren Rotwein stehen hatte, war dieser unschwer als großer Bordeaux aus der Vor-Reblauszeit zu erkennen. Klare, fast brilliante Farbe mit noch intaktem Rot, in der Nase Erdbeerton, feine Süße, perfekt gereifter alter Cabernet, unendliche Finesse und zeitlose Eleganz, wie sie nur bei diesen Weinen zu finden ist. Dieser hier war ein ganz besonders erlesenes Stück. Platt war ich, als das Geheimnis gelüftet wurde. Eine 1928(!) rekorkte Flasche Latour aus dem Jahre 1789. Nicht nur mein bisher ältester Rotwein, sondern auch ein ganz, ganz großes Weinerlebnis – 100/100.
